‘These confiscations underpin our very serious concerns about the proliferation of firearms in our city. Our staff remove so many firearms from the streets, and yet the supply just seems endless. Gun violence is one of the key reasons why we are battling to drive down our murder rates. More needs to be done to track the origins of these weapons, how they end up in circulation on our streets, and how to cut off the supply lines. It is also critical that firearm cases and ballistics be fast-tracked. The City has witnessed first-hand through our watching briefs, the slow pace of cases where the arrests were made by our staff, and so we renew our call for greater urgency, resources and commitment from the criminal justice system to deal with gun violence,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

In general enforcement efforts over the past week, the City’s agencies made 396 arrests and issued 54 094 fines for various traffic and by-law transgressions.

Law Enforcement officers conducted 734 operations, made 223 arrests and issued 5 200 notices.

Their Metro Police counterparts made 76 arrests, including six for driving under the influence, and issued 3 960 traffic and by-law fines.

Cape Town Traffic recorded 44 934 offences in the past week, made 97 arrests (82 for drunk driving and 10 for reckless and negligent driving), impounded 260 vehicles and executed 4 151 warrants of arrest.

The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 2 215 incidents, including 98 fires, 175 cases of assault, 65 cases of domestic violence and 67 road accidents.
