City trials no-waste bin zone at Miller’s Point

The City of Cape Town is piloting a waste management project to protect the unique coastal environment of Miller’s Point south of Simon’s Town. The area has been declared a no-waste bin zone as a trial.

The pilot is being undertaken by the City’s Recreation and Parks and Environmental Management Departments. Signs have been installed to inform visitors of the no-waste bin zone.

The picnic site, public boat launch site, and tidal pool area at the Miller’s Point public space are included in the trial. There are no shops or commercial outlets at the site, and therefore, everything that comes into the area is brought in by the visitors themselves, and waste must be taken home with them. 

Miller’s Point is relatively remote. Waste bins are often knocked over by the wind, or the local baboon troop with litter being blown across the coastal landscape by the strong south-easterly winds.

Thus far, the public’s response to the new approach has been encouraging, and if successful, we may consider expanding the no-waste bin zone to other remote coastal areas. 

The public is kindly requested to please participate and take responsibility for their own waste by taking it home with them.
