Bradwell ‘springs’ back to life

The Bradwell Spring in Vredehoek was reopened to the public on Monday, 13 August 2024, following refurbishment of its infrastructure.
The refurbishment took place over five months, from February to July 2024 when the project was concluded, at a cost of R425 000. Prior to that, the water collection point was closed at the seasonal spring in November 2023 due to low flow.
The primary objective of undertaking the refurbishment was to extend the spring's water supply. Work done consisted of lowering the depth of the abstraction point and installing a natural filtration system with the associated pipes. The paving was also rehabilitated and taps installed.
The City's Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, and Ward 77 Councillor, Francine Higham, joined the project team to celebrate the spring's reopening.
'We welcome the much-needed improvements made to restore Bradwell Spring for more residents to be able to enjoy this community benefit. The refurbishment will assist greatly in increasing the yield of spring water available as we officially reopen the facility to the public,' said Councillor Badroodien.
Bradwell Spring is situated on the corner of Upper Buitenkant and Ludlow Street (next to the Yeoville Sports field). It was opened by the Water and Sanitation Directorate in 2019, as second formalised spring water collection point built by the City, after Newlands Spring.
What residents need to keep in mind about Bradwell Spring:
- The spring is seasonal, which may result in reduced water flow or pressure during summer;
- Bradwell Spring water is not treated, therefore residents use it at their own risk. The spring water is not recommended for human consumption;
- This water is not for commercial use and may not be sold. City staff monitor the site and will act on transgressions when needed.
