City celebrates its graduates

The City hosted its annual Education, Training and Development (ETD) Recognition Awards ceremony on Wednesday, 3 June 2026 where 142 graduates

Some of the fields in which staff members have furthered their studies include Public Administration; Environmental Management; Engineering; Industrial Psychology and Public Health. Graduate employees were recognised for their academic achievements across various qualification categories, which included certificates, Diplomas, Degrees, Honours, Masters and Doctorate Degrees.‘This week we had the opportunity to celebrate our 142 graduates! Each year we make a point of recognising and celebrating these ambitious and committed employees for their academic achievements at the Education, Training and Development (ETD) Recognition Awards ceremony. Despite the intense challenges and pressures of balancing their professional and family lives, these individuals persevered and tackled further learning which can make a difference in their career journey. She received financial assistance from the City through an external bursary in 2018 while completing her degree and was then accepted into the City’s urban sustainability internship programme. In 2020, she secured a permanent position within the Environmental and Heritage Management branch at the City and has not looked back since. Metro Budgets compared: Cape Town offers highest household relief

The City of Cape Town offers the most rates relief and benefits for pensioners and indigent households

Comparing the budgets of the five biggest cities in South Africa, Cape Town offers the highest rates relief and widest pensioner and indigent benefits for each major relief category:<ul><li>100% rates rebate for indigent households (property value of R620 000 or less, or R7 500 maximum monthly household income)</li><li>Free Basic Water and Sanitation (15KL water / 10,5KL sanitation monthly for indigent households)</li><li>Rates-Free Benefit (first R620 000 of property value rates-free for homes up to R8m)</li><li>Lifeline electricity qualifying threshold (property value R500 000 or less, monthly household income of R7 500 or less. Usage <450kWh monthly-average to stay on lifeline)</li><li>Pensioner benefits (10-100% rates rebate and lifeline electricity for pensioners with a monthly household income of R27 000 or less, regardless of property value)</li></ul>In an address to Council on 27 May, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced the proposed further widening of rates relief for all residential properties up to R8m (previously R7m) to get the first R620 000 rates-free, up from R450 000 currently in 25/26. Pensioners also continue to benefit from the country's widest rebate qualifying criteria, with Cape Town also the only metro offering lifeline electricity to pensioners up to R27 000 monthly household income. Civic Centre to host local Home Affairs branch by July 2026

The City of Cape Town has handed over the site at the Civic Centre where the National Department of Home Affairs will establish an office to serve clients on an appointment-only basis.

The City of Cape Town’s Economic Growth Directorate in consultation with the Corporate Services Directorate, has obtained Council approval and is finalising a lease agreement with the National Department of Home Affairs to establish an appointment-only office at the Civic Centre on Hertzog Boulevard in the Cape Town central business district. The office will be located on the second floor of the Civic Centre, next to the City’s cash office. ‘We are delighted to hand over this site to the National Department of Home Affairs so that construction can commence to prepare the office for operations. To minimise disruption to our customers and visitors, building work will take place after hours, over weekends, and on public holidays. ‘I am advised that, if all proceeds according to plan, the office will be operational before the end of July, and we look forward to reaching this milestone. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/Home%20Affairs%201.jpg" alt="" style="width:906px;" /> </figure>‘It is truly remarkable what we can achieve when the different spheres of government collaborate.
