Graduate internships, apprenticeships and learnerships <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​Graduate internships</h2><p>A graduate internship is a set period of practical training and mentorship in the field you have studied, usually with a monthly stipend.</p><h4> Why do an internship? </h4><ul><li>Get experience in your field of study.</li><li>Get practical work experience after graduating.</li><li>Get better employment opportunities after the internship.</li></ul><h4> What does the City of Cape Town offer?</h4><p><span class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-0">Our </span> <span class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-0">Graduate Internship Programme </span> <span class="ms-rteThemeForeColor-2-0">provides hands-on work experience, training and mentorship to new graduates – usually in areas with scarce or critical skills. You will get practical on-the-job training guided by a mentor, as well as complete a course of study with an education and training provider. A learnership leads to a nationally recognised qualification in a certain field; e.g. electrical engineering, hairdressing or project management.</p><h4> Why do a learnership? </h4><ul><li>Get a nationally recognised qualification while working and earning a stipend.</li><li>Enjoy better employment opportunities after the learnership.</li></ul><h4> What does the City of Cape Town offer?</h4><p>Our learnerships are aimed at those just leaving school and those who are under-skilled and want to develop skills. Once you have completed your apprenticeship and passed an exam, you will receive a national artisan/trade qualification, allowing you to be employed as a skilled artisan by government or the private sector.</p><h4> Why do an apprenticeship? </h4><ul><li>Go straight into practical training for a trade.</li><li>Get a nationally recognised qualification while working and earning a stipend.</li><li>It's a good option if you are struggling to get into a tertiary institution – due to poor academic marks or cost.</li><li>Enjoy better employment and self-employment opportunities after the apprenticeship.</li></ul><h4> What does the City of Cape Town offer?</h4><p> About 20% of City of Cape Town apprenticeships go to staff – the rest are open to people not employed by the City. Although currently, we offer few apprenticeships, we will be partnering with tertiary institutions to offer more apprenticeships in the future. You will spend your day observing a worker.
