Seven of our most popular beaches were awarded Blue Flag status as part of the National Blue Flag Programme, coordinated by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA).
|
Our beaches have successfully participated in the voluntary Blue Flag Beach Programme since its inception in South Africa in 2001. This year also saw us being awarded with Blue Flag Long Service award, long leading the country in achieving world-class standards for beaches.

We are very proud that so many of our beaches are recognised as meeting the very high standards set out in the Blue Flag Programme. This shows that the sustainable environmental management in place has succeeded in maintaining our coastal ecological integrity.

The status indicates that our beaches all have their own environmental education programmes; are environmentally sound; adhere to safety criteria and security standards; that bathing water is of the highest standard; beaches are clean; abultion facilities are adequate and there is parking.

The following City beaches were awarded full Blue Flag status for the 2015/16 summer season which runs from 1 December 2015 to 31 March 2016:

Bikini Beach (including Silver 10-year service award)

Mnandi Beach (including Bronze 5-year service award)

Strandfontein Beach

Llandudno Beach (December to January)

Camps Bay Beach (including Bronze 5-year service award)

Clifton 4th Beach (including Silver 10-year service award)

Silwerstroomstrand (including Bronze 5-year service award)

In addition, three of our Cape Town Marinas received full Blue Flag status: the False Bay Yacht Club, the Water Club, and Harbour Island.

Fish Hoek, Seaforth, Muizenberg and Melkbosstrand beaches were awarded pilot Blue Flag status for the 2015/2016 summer season which means they will be considered for full Blue Flag status if certain criteria are met within a specified period of time. Expanding the number of Blue Flag beaches in our City is an important goal, as it will further promote the city as a premier international beach holiday destination.

https://www.blueflag.org/
| 2016-08-31T22:00:00Z | GP0|#ec796ef5-2baf-48fb-86c2-54dbc1fd30d7;L0|#0ec796ef5-2baf-48fb-86c2-54dbc1fd30d7|Achievements and awards;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#c18d66eb-c67e-4d61-b6b8-8abda396d522;L0|#0c18d66eb-c67e-4d61-b6b8-8abda396d522|The Caring City;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa | City of Cape Town’s Beaches | Blue Flag Award | | | | | | 0 |
