Dr Zahid Badroodien: Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health <h2 class="sectHeading">Vision statement​​​​​​​</h2> <span><figure class="figure-credits right"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Inline%20Images/badroodien.jpg" /><figcaption> <p> <b>Dr Zahid Badroodien</b><br>Community Services and Health<br></p> </figcaption> </figure></span> <p>The City of Cape Town is committed to creating opportunities for residents and communities by providing access to a range of facilities, that are of the highest standard.<br></p><p>Ensuring that our residents have equal access to information, programmes and facilities that can unlock and grow personal potential, is instrumental to their development.</p><h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Biography</h2><p>Dr Zahid Badroodien is a proud resident of the Cape Flats and is passionate about young people and the development of people in disadvantaged communities. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from Stellenbosch University and a certificate in Challenges in Global Health from Utrecht University.<br></p><p>In 2015, Dr Badroodien was employed by the Western Cape Health Department where he worked as a medical intern at Khayelitsha Hospital and was appointed community service doctor in 2017. Between 2015 and 2018, Dr Badroodien served as the Western Cape Provincial Chairperson of the Junior Doctors Association of South Africa (JUDASA). He later went on to serve on JUDASA’s National Executive Committee as a Policy Unit Officer and subsequently became its Treasurer-General.</p><p>In 2016, Dr Badroodien graduated from the DA’s Young Leaders Programme, a prestigious leadership programme designed to shape future leaders. He was then elected as Proportional Representation (PR) Councillor for the Democratic Alliance and served as the Deputy Chairperson of the Communities Development Portfolio, focusing on transversal development strategies and community upliftment programmes.</p><p>A strong advocate for youth development, Dr Badroodien serves as a PR Councillor representing the DA as a constituency representative at both The University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).</p><p>In 2018, Dr Badroodien was appointed Publicity Ambassador for the International Peace Youth Group and as a Youth Ambassador for the International Kindness Campaign by the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with Africa Unite and ACTIVATE!</p><p>Dr Badroodien is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Edinburgh and his involvement in both the health and community services sectors is indicative of his pro-community approach. </p><h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​Projects and departments</h2><p>As Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Dr Zahid Badroodien has oversight over the following areas:</p><ul><li>City Health </li><li>Library and Information Services </li><li>Recreation and Parks </li><li>Social Development and Early Childhood Development (ECD)</li></ul><p> <strong>New investments will be focussed on the following projects:</strong></p><ul><li>Promoting an arts and culture footprint across the city, to achieve social cohesion and community development by supporting local talent through innovative projects and programmes.</li><li>Establishing one safe space in each of the four areas in the city.</li><li>Ensuring a basic minimum standard is maintained at all City facilities so as to ensure that we can work towards safe communities for all residents.</li><li>Initiate effective programmes to address the concerning rate of vandalism affecting our facilities.
