Hold a large event in the city
Holding a large event in the city requires smart organisation and usually an events permit issued by our Events Office. Follow our guidelines to ensure your event is compliant, serviced and supported.
Planning your event
When planning to host an event in the City it is important to find out whether you:
- require a permit;
- need city support;
- understand how to apply for a permit and/or support;
- are aware of all existing policies, management procedures and legislation relevant to event organisers; and
- understand how to host your event efficiently with minimal impact on citizens/environment.
Please consult the following regulation and guideline documents before planning:
Did you know?
A well-run city: Our
Events Policy is a guide for City and other hosted events. Helpful explanations in the policy document include: common events-related phrases and abbreviations, application and permits processes and how to plan and execute events in an efficient manner.
Apply for a permit
The Event Permits Office is a one-stop shop that facilitates all the necessary permissions to host your event. The requirements and permitting process for all events are outlined in the
Events By-law which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page. We recommend you read carefully through the by-law before you make your application.
Please note
You will need to submit a full event plan with your application.
Once your application is received, it is sent to the various service departments in the City for comments and approvals, and only once all the conditions are met, is an event permit issued. Learn more about the process by following the City Connect link below.
Funding support for events
The City wishes to support event organisers and has established a special events committee to review all applications for event funding. Please go through to our event support application page in City Connect for a step-by-step guide on how to apply.
Event services
The City offers excellent event services for events organisers and providers. These include both private and municipal service providers. See Events services and infrastructure for more information on what services you should consider for your event.

An opportunity city: City municipal services are activated through the event permit process.
Event greening
We ask that all organisers, venue staff and suppliers pay special attention to keeping their event as clean and green as possible. For useful tips on running a smart, green event please see our
Event greening page.
Your event permit
Once your plan is approved and the permit is issued, you have to ensure the event fully complies with our requirements. If these are in question at any stage, the City may request an event organiser to immediately provide proof of compliance.
Failure to do so will result in one or more of the following:
- The issue of a notice of non-compliance
- A fine
- Halting or cancelling the event, either prior-to or during the event
Please note
An event may be cancelled or stopped at any time by the City manager or anyone delegated by the City if public safety is compromised.
