Activity Day Meeting – 6 October 2021
Solomzi reported that they are still waiting on the outcome of the speed limit review as it is not being finalised yet and still under investigation. Traffic calming was not warranted in terms of the policy.
Cllr Peck stated that this is the same thing and one of the parts where they turn off into the Spar that they need to widen the road because somebody will knock into the back side of someone else and need to be sorted out. He does not understand why other places can get it right and the City cannot and want to see the policy.
The Chairperson responded to research the policy in Stellenbosch and might be able to assist the City.
Solomzi responded that they do have the policy of Stellenbosch which it is different to the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Calming Policy and they also do review of the policy where they look at other metros and neighbouring municipalities and will forward the policy to the Cllrs. He said this 2016 policy of the City is very strict and purely look at schools and secondary to that the routes to schools which they have not gone into it and thirdly would be public amenities unlike the previous policy where it took into account other factors i.e. speeding and what type of road it is and ultimately score where you could warrant roads where there wer no public facilities.
Cllr Peck stated that they need to look at this very seriously and get it resolved as the residents are not happy and he can name a number of streets e.g. Riesling & Stellenberg that has been turned down for any sort of speed calming but if you go along these streets and you will see how drivers speed down the road.
RESOLVED
The Subcouncil to arrange a meeting with Solomzi, Siphelelo, Cllr Peck and Ald Pringle to discuss in detail and to have a broader engagement when they submit their application form and what they asking for in terms of traffic calming.
Solomzi to send the traffic calming policy of the Stellenbosch Municipality through to the Cllrs.
That the item REMAINS on the MRA’s.
