The Source to Sea River Corridor Project aims to restore certain river systems in Cape Town.
About
The
Source to Sea River Corridor Project connects Table Mountain National Park to
Zandvlei, an important estuary and nature reserve. It focuses on two primary river courses which flow through high, middle and low income areas, connecting residents, businesses, schools, sports clubs, and faith institutions.
Sadly, many urban rivers have become passages for stormwater flow, and are polluted. In many places, river corridors are viewed as social liabilities, rather than positive natural open spaces with ecological, social and economic opportunities and benefits.
The project aims to:
- develop opportunities for eco-heritage, education, recreation and tourism;
- improve the identified river corridors to increase urban/natural spaces for recreation;
- provide short and long-term local employment opportunities; and
- restore damaged natural and open space corridors for healthy ecosystems.
