Smart Driver Programme
The Smart Driver Programme for fleet drivers forms part of the City’s Travel SMART Programme. It is currently managed by the Environmental Management Department.
About
We have approximately 8 700 vehicles in our fleet, operated by around 10 000 drivers, that help to deliver essential services to our residents.
As a responsible and well-run organisation, we introduced the Smart Driver programme in 2013 to help change driver behaviour.
The training ensures that:
- our drivers are safe on the roads;
- we reap the financial benefits of reduced fuel use; and
- vehicles are driven in accordance with ‘smart driver’ principles to emit less carbon dioxide.
Through ongoing skills development, training, and driver monitoring, the programme promotes safer, greener and more economical driving. Managers and supervisors responsible for driver and fleet management are also trained to manage risk in transport.
So far, more than 4 500 fleet drivers have been trained, including the MyCiTi and Dial-a-Ride bus drivers.
The Environmental Management Department oversees the programme and implements the training.
