Helderberg Marine Protected Area Programme
The Helderberg Marine Protected Area (MPA) is found on the north-eastern side of False Bay, in Strand. Beach clean-ups are organised to help combat the effects of pollution.
About
The area has been off limits to the public for decades and has since become an important roost site for terns, which migrate there from Finland, Estonia and other Balkan countries in numbers as high as 20 000. However, pollution from the Lourens and Eerste rivers is a significant risk to the ecological integrity of the MPA. You can get involved with regular beach clean-ups that are organised with the help of local communities and organisations.
The Helderberg MPA was formed in 2009 with the intent to improve management of the Helderberg Marine Protected Area and surrounds; increase marine and coastal monitoring and law enforcement; promote and expand marine and environmental education; and promote regular coastal clean-ups, arranged with the help of local communities and organisations.The Helderberg MPA Management Plan forms part of the City’s
Coastal Management Programme.
