Glencairn Beach Restoration and Rail Protection Project

<h2 class="sectHeading">About</h2> The Glencairn Beach Restoration and Rail Project was implemented to ensure safe rail service on the South Peninsula Transport Corridor by protecting the railway line from coastal damage caused by storm surges and wind-blown sand. In certain locations along the SPTC, specifically <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/see-all-city-facilities/our-recreational-facilities/Beaches/Glencairn%20Beach">Glencairn Beach</a>, the railway has been exposed to erosion events, which can impact the health and safety of the public and rail authorities and cause major disruptions to commuters. The project consisted of two phases:<ul><li> Phase 1: Identifying of risk scenarios posed by storm surges and sea level rise in the short, medium and long term</li><li> Phase 2: Identifying the most sustainable and risk-adverse response to protect the Glencairn railway in the short term through the use of a multi-criteria decisions analysis tool</li></ul>The project is currently in phase 2 and construction will begin as soon as the project meets public participation and environmental authorisation requirements.
