Our Identikidz teams are deployed at popular beaches across Cape Town during the summer holidays to ensure the safety of young beachgoers.

About the programme
During the summer holidays, beaches can become overpopulated and often children are lost or separated from their families.
Our
Community, Arts and Culture Development Department helps to alleviate this problem with the Identikidz Programme.
The programme provides safety for children and peace of mind for parents or caregivers visiting the beaches. Teams made up of City staff and
EPWP workers are deployed to various 'hot spots' to register children and issue identification armbands.
Quick stat
During the 2024/25 festive season, 120 000 children were tagged to help reunite them with their caregivers if separated.
How it works
Easy-to-spot City branded booths are stationed at the various participating beaches. When you arrive at the beach, you can go to the nearest booth to register your child.
We take down your full name, contact details and home address as well as your child’s name, age, gender and a short description of their appearance. Once we have all the necessary details, we will issue your child with an identification armband.
The armband has a unique number on it which is recorded next to the details during registration. It is waterproof so your child can still swim and have fun without damaging it.
We will use your contact details to track you down in the event that your child is lost, and we can use your child’s description to identify them if they are reported missing.
unclaimed children
It is important that you keep your cellphone close by and charged throughout the day in case we need to contact you. If a child is found on the beach and we are unable to track down the family by the end of the day, the child is handed over to the
Western Cape Department of Social Development.
If you report your child missing, we will notify the relevant authorities. We work with our
Disaster Risk Management Centre as well as the
South African Police Service (SAPS) to find missing children.
