Sea Point swimming pool closed for maintenance

A routine inspection detected a sinkhole, created by a collapsed water line.

The site has been deemed unsafe for public use during this time, and health and safety precautions have been implemented, including signage and fencing of restricted areas. The City is committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors and this maintenance is essential to the proper upkeep of the facility.'Sea Point swimming pool is one of our most popular facilities, open all year long. During a routine inspection of the facility, a sinkhole was detected. The sinkhole was created by a collapsed water line. For a proper assessment of the damage and to determine the exact scope of work required for repairs, the entire water line must be unearthed. At this stage, the pool has to be closed due to this critical work. We apologise to the facility users for any inconvenience caused, and will work as speedily as possible to ensure that this amenity is up and running soon,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross. Bathers are encouraged to use the Long Street indoor swimming pool while Sea Point is closed. Long Street's operating hours are Monday to Sunday and public holidays, 07:00 - 19:00Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool is reserved for use by ladies only every Tuesday from 10:00 – 14:00, or 10:00 - 13:00 during school holidays. Lane diversions to accommodate MyCiTi construction work along Turfhall Road

City's Urban Mobility Directorate commenced with major construction work along Turfhall Road (M24) from the intersection with the M5 freeway in the west to the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads in the east.

In May this year, the City's Urban Mobility Directorate commenced with major construction work along Turfhall Road (M24) from the intersection with the M5 freeway in the west to the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads in the east. The impacted section is 1,7 km in distance. Pending any delays or unforeseen challenges, the project will be complete by July 2027.Work is currently happening along the Turf Hall Road median island, from the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads through to the M5, to prepare the area for the construction of the two dedicated bus lanes that will be located in the median of Turfhall Road. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/DSC_2554.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:1026px;" /> </figure>Thus, the next phase of the construction work requires temporary lane diversions, and the implementation of a four-way stop street. These measures will be implemented in coming days, and effective until July 2025:<ul><li>The lane diversions will be implemented along Turfhall Road between the M5 freeway and the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads</li><li>The westbound lanes serving traffic towards the M5 freeway will be closed to traffic</li><li>The westbound traffic will be diverted along two new lanes within the old centre median</li><li>Dual traffic lanes will be accommodated in both directions</li><li>A four-way stop street will be implemented along Turfhall Road at the intersection with Civic Road and Woodbury Road</li><li>Temporary public transport stops will be implemented along the reconfigured road</li><li>Temporary walkways and pedestrian crossings will be implemented as well</li><li>The implementation of the lane diversions will be undertaken in phases over coming days</li></ul> 'The interventions will be needed for nearly a year while we are busy with the construction of the infrastructure that is needed for the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service. We are very aware of the traffic delays and associated frustrations that may arise during this time. Unfortunately, construction work always comes with a level of inconvenience and disruptions to traffic flow. 'We are doing all we can to minimise the impact, but I want to caution residents upfront to anticipate congestion. Our project managers are continuously liaising with the contractor, and monitoring the work on site. I kindly request all to please adhere to the flag personnel's instructions, and the signage around the work areas – these are in the interest of the safety and security of all,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/Turfhall%2011.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:946px;" /> </figure>Roll-out of Phase 2A of the MyCiTi bus serviceThe roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service to the metro-south east is a mammoth undertaking. Over the next three financial years, the City will have a number of major construction projects ongoing to implement the dedicated red bus lanes, stations and stops; and improvements to roads and transport facilities to bring scheduled, affordable, safe, and reliable public transport service to over 30 communities. 'Multiple construction projects are currently under way in many of the areas already. With the latest project along Turfhall Road I want to thank communities and road users for their ongoing support,' said Councillor Quintas. Turfhall Road project detail:<ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li>Reconstruction of two eastbound and two westbound lanes along Turfhall Road, with turning lanes at the intersections with the M5/Racecourse Road; Chukker Road and Sir Alfred Avenue; Woodbury and Civic Roads; and Flamingo Road in the west</li><li>Construction of two dedicated bus lanes in the median of Turfhall Road</li><li>Construction of walkways and cycle lanes on both sides of Turfhall Road</li><li>Relocation and upgrade of bulk water mains and sewer mains</li><li>Improvements to traffic signals and drainage, and new road markings</li></ul>The construction work is being done in phases. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/Turfhall%2021.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:978px;" /> </figure>Planned work:<ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li>The road reserve along the northern side of Turfhall Road is impacted first given the relocation of the underground services – such as water mains, sewer mains, and stormwater infrastructure, starting at the M5 and working towards the direction of Flamingo and Benona Roads</li><li>The first phase concerns the widening of the road shoulder, reconstruction of the median along Turfhall Road, and construction of walking and cycle lanes </li><li>The second phase concerns the construction of the westbound carriageway (two lanes) towards the M5 and Dalewood Road</li><li>The third phase concerns the construction of the eastbound carriageway towards Jan Smuts Drive</li><li>The fourth phase concerns the construction of the two dedicated bus lanes in the median</li></ul> The work is taking place between 09:00 and 15:00 on weekdays to minimise the impact on road users during peak periods; and work on weekends and public holidays may happen as and when needed. Access solutions included in draft spatial development framework for Cape Town CBD

The City recently published its draft local spatial development framework (LSDF) for the Cape Town CBD for public comment.

The LSDF is a spatial policy document intended to shape the CBD area's future growth and development. Once approved, the LSDF will guide decisions about land use and development, density, transportation and urban design, and also inform public investment in infrastructure to facilitate the CBD's transition into a more sustainable, equitable, inclusive, liveable and resilient space to the benefit of current and future generations of Capetonians. 'The LSDF intends to transform the CBD into an environment that is more people-centred with urban design interventions to improve general mobility and access for pedestrians, efforts to conserve heritage areas, a public land programme to inform land release in support of affordable housing opportunities, an appropriately scaled urban form and interface to encourage mixed use intensification. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/CBD%20LSDF%202.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:962px;" /> </figure>'The CBD is key to Cape Town's resilience and economic health. This is a great opportunity for residents to help shape the future CBD. The study is currently underway and has not been concluded. This study is independent of the LSDF, but are mutually informing. A transport analysis conducted as part of the scoping study revealed that the current freeway viaducts carry up to 7 000 vehicles per hour in both directions in the morning and afternoon peak periods. The intention is to develop an optimum transport and land use solution to facilitate long-term investment and economic growth, while maximising the precinct's inherit public amenity and development potential. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/CBD%20LSDF%203.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:949px;" /> </figure>Making provision for long-term improvements along Philip Kgosana Drive<ul><li>An underpass under Philip Kgosana Drive to link Barnham Avenue with Cauvin Road for improved access between Vredehoek, Zonnebloem, and District Six</li><li>To realign Brandweer Street with Aandbloem Street to allow for signalisation at this crossing, alternatively, an underpass should be investigated subject to funding availability</li></ul> Proposed changes at upper Long Street<ul><li>Investigate the possibility of transforming upper Long Street between the intersections with Wale and Buitensingel as a pedestrianised 'transit mall' given the current land use activity and nightlife along this stretch </li><li>Investigate the proposal to deviate traffic at night along Keerom Street to facilitate the closure of Long Street from Dorp Street to Green Street</li></ul> Pedestrian movement networkThe intention is to implement interventions at pedestrian hotspots to manage conflict with vehicular movement, and to improve pedestrian safety. These could include different surfaces like paving, signalling giving preference to pedestrians, narrower lanes, sidewalk bump-outs, and raised pedestrian crossings or intersections. Other proposals<ul><li>The classification of roads as freeways, major mobility routes, minor mobility routes, transit malls, and living streets where higher order routes will facilitate mobility and access, and lower order routes will accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and where traffic is 'deprioritised'</li><li>Develop a parking strategy that will support the transition to a more people-centred environment with the removal of at-grade public parking from identified public spaces and squares in favour of people-centric and greener spaces; and the development of park-and-ride facilities on the periphery of the CBD</li><li>Consider strengthening cycling links, for example at the fan walk along Somerset Road with the CBD via the V&A Waterfront, create a north-south spine for bicycles along Heerengracht, Adderley Street, and Government Avenue; improvements along Woodstock Main Road, and so forth</li></ul> 'The draft LSDF's primary objective as it relates to pedestrians and cyclists is to, ideally, arrive at a 'car free' CBD in future where the freeways, major mobility routes, and minor mobility routes facilitate vehicular access to and from the area, and where the inner-grid of lower order streets gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists. This will not happen overnight as public transport and passenger rail in particular, will have to be fully functional and efficient. However, it is important to keep this objective in mind as we are refining the spatial vision for the CBD of 2040,' said Alderman Andrews. The study area is divided into eight precincts, each with its own characteristics, constraints, and opportunities namely De Waterkant, Convention District, Mid-City, Company Gardens, East Foreshore, Cape Town Station, East City, and Lower Gardens. The LSDF provides development guidelines for each precinct in terms of its urban form, approach towards height management, and character assessment. The draft LSDF is available on the City's website.
