Kloof Road slope stabilisation work on trackKloof Road slope stabilisation work on trackThis slope stabilisation work became necessary after a section of the embankment below Nettleton Road in Clifton collapsed in July 2020
‘This slope stabilisation work became necessary after a section of the embankment below Nettleton Road in Clifton collapsed in July 2020. Following the collapse, temporary stabilisation measures were put in place in 2021 to ensure safety while we were preparing for the permanent work. The work involves reinforcing the slope with ground anchors, known as soil nails, along with sprayed concrete to stabilise the area. It also includes reshaping the slope and improving drainage to prevent future erosion,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Kloof Road will remain open to traffic throughout the duration of the project. Traffic is being accommodated with minimal disruption where possible, and appropriate signage has been put in place.

‘Once stabilisation is complete, parts of the concrete surface will be finished with stone cladding to blend in with the surrounding environment. All services in the area will be restored and the roadside parking will be reconstructed with new asphalt surfacing. This project is about more than just restoring a slope. It’s about protecting public infrastructure, safeguarding nearby properties, and making this area safer for all road users. We thank the local residents for their ongoing support,’ said Councillor Quintas.

End2025-07-09T22:00:00Z1

Continuous efforts to maintain the Sir Lowry’s Pass RiverContinuous efforts to maintain the Sir Lowry’s Pass RiverMaintenance of the City’s rivers, canals and waterways takes place all year round, with operations ramping up pre-winter in preparation for seasonal rainfall.
The Sir Lowry’s Pass River originates at an elevation of around 1 200 meters above sea level in the Hottentots Holland Mountain Nature Reserve. The river is approximately 12 kilometres long.

The City’s Catchment Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) Branch recently conducted cleaning of this river, among several others, to ensure the efficient flow of water and to prevent blockages.

On 13 June, the project was concluded at a cost of R150 000.

‘Working to clear the Sir Lowry’s Pass River has been crucial for this season, while the R214 million Sir Lowry’s Pass River upgrade project is under way. The long term upgrades are designed to significantly advance the river's flood risk for the future. For now, the City will continue to conduct a proactive and ongoing river maintenance programme,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

The scope of work of this project included removal of alien vegetation, litter and debris along key sections of the river. Special attention was given to clearing vegetation around the headwall structure to allow for proper inspection and maintenance access.

In addition, mechanical plant clearing was undertaken to remove accumulated silt from the riverbed, thereby improving stormwater flow and reducing the risk of localised flooding. All cuttings and debris will be disposed of at a legal dumping site.

‘Through ongoing and planned maintenance, our aim is to improve the quality of all inland water bodies. It also allows us to be best prepared to manage higher water volumes along the City’s waterways, as the rainy winter season progresses,’ said Councillor Badroodien.

During the 2024/2025 financial year, CSRM carried out eight maintenance initiatives in the Sir Lowry’s Pass River at a total cost of R900 000.
