Comment on the proposed renaming of Ben Friedman Square to Strand Muslim Community Square

<h2 class="sectHeading">About<br></h2><p> The proposed renaming of Ben Friedman Square in Strand aims to honour and recognise the rich heritage of the Strand Muslim community, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2023. </p><p> For the past hundred years, the community has had a harmonious relationship with the Friedman family and has been doing business with Friedman and Cohen for generations. </p><p> The square is anchored by three community mosques, which bear testimony to the once vibrant Muslim community in the area. </p><p> During Apartheid, the enactment of the Group Areas Act resulted in the forced removal of the community from the area.
