The replacement is free of charge and the new meter will ensure more accurate readings, greater usage control and cost management. The replacement is compulsory as the meters belong to the City of Cape Town.<br></p></div> | <h2 class="sectHeading">About</h2><p> We have appointed a contractor to replace the older City-owned credit meters with new prepaid meters in households in City-supplied suburbs across Cape Town. The cost of the new meters is covered by the City in areas where the programme is active. <br><br> It is a compulsory programme. At its heart it is about investment in City infrastructure as some of the older meters are more than 30 years old. The new meters ensure more accuracy and reliability and hold benefits for customers such as greater control over usage and better monitoring. In addition, qualifying households may be considered to be placed on the highly subsidised
<a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/residential-utility-services/residential-electricity-services/the-cost-of-electricity">Lifeline tariff </a>where applicable.<br><br> Once the earmarked area is due for the meter replacement (see the <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Forms%2c%20notices%2c%20tariffs%20and%20lists/meter-replacement-programme-schedule.pdf">Meter Replacement Programme schedule</a>), our contractor will drop a letter in your post box to arrange an appointment. After arranging a suitable time for the meter replacement, you can verify the supplied reference number by phoning the City's Call Centre on 0860 103 089.<br>

<br><strong>How will I recognise the contractor who will perform the meter replacement?</strong><br><br>City-employed contractors must carry staff IDs that indicate they are City of Cape Town contractors. Customers can also confirm the legitimacy of the field staff by requesting a work order number or calling the City's Call Centre on 0860 103 089 to check if it is a legitimate works notice.<br><br><br><strong>Tips for residents:</strong><br><strong></strong></p><ul><li>Always verify the work order number when an official visits your home<br></li><li>Check the official's City-issued identification card<br></li><li>The ID card must display the City logo, the name and surname of the staff member or mandated contractor, and must contain an embedded photo of the staff member or mandated contractor</li></ul>

<b>Please note:</b> There are two electricity metering programmes underway:</p>

<p>1. The compulsory City Meter Replacement Programme</p><p>2. The National Prepaid Meter Software Update with tokens (TID)<br><br></p><p>The current prepaid electricity metering software will expire at the end of 2024 for all prepaid electricity meters in South Africa. Prepaid meters must be updated with the new software, or customers won't be able to recharge their meters with new tokens and won't have power supply. More than 99% of meters in City-supplied areas in Cape Town have been updated. This software update programme is therefore coming to a close and should not be confused with the City's Meter Replacement Programme. </p>

<h2 class="sectHeading">Apply</h2><p>Please refer to the meter replacement schedule to see when we are visiting your area. There is no charge for the meter replacement. </p><p> If your neighbourhood is only scheduled for the following year, you may request an earlier date, but fees will apply as this will be considered an ad-hoc replacement. A conversion fee will be loaded onto the pre-paid account as debt and the funds will be recovered as a percentage of the electricity purchases that you make once the meter is installed.
