Apply for an electricity connection<span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​How to apply</h2></span> <p>Residents and businesses follow the same process when applying for an electricity connection. In your application, you will need to indicate which category of connection you are applying for.</p><p>As a resident, you can either apply for the <a href="">lifeline or domestic tariff</a>. As a business, you can apply for different tariffs based on your expected monthly energy requirements.</p> <span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Please note</h4><p> <b></b>Before you start your application, you must hire an electrical contractor who will assess the cabling and infrastructure, and perform the installation work. Their details will need to be submitted along with your application. </p></div></div></span> <p> <strong>Step 1:</strong> You will need to download and complete the New or Modified Electricity Supply Service Application Form, which you will find in the document downloads section below. Along with the form, you will also need to provide supporting documentation.</p> <span> <div class="lrg-icon-content bordered"><div class="lrg-icon lrg-check"><p> <b>​​​​​​Please include the following with your application:</b></p><ul><li>a copy of the rates account for the property</li><li>the property owner’s ID or a certified copy of their ID</li><li>a letter of proxy from the company's board of directors if the application is being made for a company, giving the person doing the application authority to sign on behalf of the company</li><li>certified identification of the person who will be signing on behalf of the company if the application is being made for a company</li><li>Proof of registration as an electrical contractor with the Department of Labour.</li><li>other documents as requested</li></ul></div></div></span> <p> <strong>Step 2:</strong> Once you have completed the forms and gathered your supporting documentation, you can submit it at any of our Customer Support Offices listed on the application form.</p><p> <strong>Step 3:</strong> If you are requesting a standard residential electricity connection, you will have to pay for the cost of connecting your property to the shared network. You may also have to contribute to the cost of the shared network based on how much electricity you require.</p><p>Non-standard electricity connections are quotable, but only after you have paid for the required capacity of electricity your property is going to use. You will also have to pay a quotation fee before a quote is provided. You can find these costs in the Tariff schedules in the document downloads section below.</p><p> <strong>Step 4:</strong> Once you have submitted your application, we are mandated to get back to you with a quote within ten working days if there is existing infrastructure and within a month if the network must be extended. If a new network needs to be installed, or the work is for industrial or commercial industries, all parties will agree on a time frame within which the City must provide a quote.</p> <span> <div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>Please note</h4><p> <b></b>If you want to <a href="">connect a standby generator or an embedded generator</a>, you will have to apply for permission to connect those devices separately.</p></div></div></span><span> <h2 class="sectHeading">​​​​​​​​​​​Payment​​​​​​​</h2></span> <p>We accept the following methods of payment:</p><ul><li> <strong>Cash, debit and/or credit card:</strong><strong> </strong>We will cover the bank cost on a cash, debit and/or credit card payment on an amount above R7000 per transaction. We absorb such costs in respect of single payments of R7000 and below.</li><li> <strong>Direct deposit at Nedbank:</strong><strong> </strong>Insert your payment reference number on your deposit slip​​</li><li> <strong>Electronic payments (EFT):</strong> Select the City of Cape Town as a bank listed beneficiary on your bank's website.
