Weekly operations net close to 300 suspects Weekly operations net close to 300 suspects
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"century gothic", sans-serif;">The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments arrested 294 suspects and issued 57 199 fines during weekly enforcement operations. Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officers( LEAP) accounted for 124 arrests.

On Sunday evening, 11 September 2022, LEAP officers reacted to reports of gunshots and gang activity in Spitfire Crescent, De Hague, Delft.

Officers responded, and on arrival, a group of people ran off in different directions. One of those fleeing, fired a shot at the two officers, and they returned fire.

The suspect ran into a nearby yard, where he was apprehended, and handed over to Delft South SAPS for further investigation. Another suspect was also arrested by the officers. They recovered a Norinco pistol with a magazine and five live rounds of ammunition.

A case was opened for the Illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a public area.

'The speedy transfer of information and follow up by our enforcement staff often lead to successful arrests and confiscation of dangerous weapons, and this is but the latest example. Suspects literally taking aim at our staff is also becoming far more commonplace, and just serves as a reminder of the lack of respect for the rule of law and the community. Our officers are confronted by dangerous situations on a daily basis, but they keep showing up and we commend them for their dedication to protecting and serving their communities,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

In other Law Enforcement Department successes over the past week, officers conducted 597 enforcement operations, resulting in 172 arrests and 3 852 fines.

METRO POLICE

On Friday evening , 9 September 2022, a Metro Police CCTV surveillance operator observed two men digging on the side of the road along the N1 in Goodwood.

The operator activated patrol staff, and Goodwood SAPS members were able to apprehend both suspects and charge them for cable theft.

During general enforcement efforts in the past week, Metro Police officers arrested 100 suspects and issued 3 626 fines. Among those arrested were 47 suspects for the illegal possession of drugs and 13 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Other arrests were for contact related crimes, domestic and public violence, property-related and firearm-related transgressions.

TRAFFIC SERVICE

Traffic officers arrested 18 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol, and four for reckless and negligent driving.

They also issued 49 721 fines for various speeding and traffic related violations, impounded 64 public transport vehicles and executed 1 367 warrants of arrest.

PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE(PECC)

The PECC recorded 1 872 incidents over the past weekend, of which 828 were calls for medical assistance - including 16 gunshot trauma and 39 domestic violence calls. The number of prank calls doubled to 90, compared to the previous weekend.

'I would also like to thank all our enforcement and emergency service officers for doing duty in and around the DHL Stadium during the weekend's Sevens Rugby World Cup. Officers worked closely with the South African Police Service in ensuring a safe environment in the run up to, and during this world class event,' added Alderman Smith.

End

2022-09-11T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#4bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec;L0|#04bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec|law enforcement;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#78273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255;L0|#078273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255|Metro police;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#1590d31e-7ad8-4e2e-9ac0-344400d98f63;L0|#01590d31e-7ad8-4e2e-9ac0-344400d98f63|traffic services;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
