Weather-related assessments underway amid heavy downpours<p>​</p><p>The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) received reports of flooding in informal settlements in Gugulethu, Wynberg, Valhalla Park, Philippi and Khayelitsha, Macassar, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village and Lwandle.</p><p>DRMC teams are busy with assessments along with the City’s Informal Settlement Management Department. </p><p>Residents are requested to please ensure that there are no loose items laying around their properties that could cause any damage and to check for overhanging tree branches. </p><p>Members of the public are reminded to contact the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone to report any emergencies related to the inclement weather. </p><p>On the roads, the City’s Traffic Service recorded 13 motor vehicle accidents by mid-morning on Monday 28 June 2021, due to the heavy downpours, as well as roads flooded in a number of areas including Bellville, Ottery, Athlone, Woodstock, Plattekloof and Panorama.</p><p>‘We remind motorists to exercise caution when driving on the roads during these weather conditions. The most basic safety precautions are to drive slower and keep a safe following distance. Avoid pools of water in the road and if you have to drive through it, reduce speed dramatically to avoid aqua- plaining which could have serious consequences. It is also worth giving yourself more time to reach your destination by leaving earlier, so that you don’t feel compelled to rush. The wet weather is set to continue for most of the week, and we really want to avoid unnecessary incidents on the roads,’ said Alderman JP Smith.</p><p>In other Safety and Security-related matters, staff in the three enforcement services arrested 166 suspects and issued 69 774 fines during weekly operations.</p><p><strong>CAPE TOWN TRAFFIC SERVICE</strong></p><p>Traffic officers arrested 62 suspects, impounded 78 vehicles and 148 cell phones and issued 63 292 fines.</p><p>On Sunday, 27 June 2021 during a traffic patrol on Plattekloof Road, officers saw a VW Polo travelling towards the N1, overtaking vehicles on the left shoulder. The vehicle was stopped, and Traffic officers called for assistance from the Metro Police K9 Unit. K9 Zena sniffed out  dagga and  nine mandrax tablets, as well as a bankie of tik. The suspects  were detained at Parow SAPS.  The driver admitted it was his drugs and a  case was opened against the driver. He was also given a fine at the scene for overtaking on the shoulder of the road  and for driving without a valid driver’s licence. </p><p><strong>METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT</strong></p><p>During weekly patrols officers arrested 60 suspects and issued 2 863 fines.   </p><p>On Saturday 26 June 2021, Metro Police officers arrested five suspects for the illegal possession of mandrax and dagga in Parow, while colleagues attached to the Gang and Drug Task Team arrested three suspects for drug related crimes in the Heideveld area. </p><p>On the same day, officers followed up on a  C3 complaint regarding drug dealing at a house in Manenberg. The owner of the house gave officers permission to search a Wendy House in the backyard. Three suspects were busy packaging tik and mandrax. The suspects were arrested and detained at Manenberg SAPS.</p><p><strong>LAW ENFORCEMENT</strong></p><p>Officers arrested 44 suspects and issued 3 619  fines for various by-law transgressions.
