Update on planned water supply disruptions for the week ahead - from 14 February
What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.

All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such are off-limits to members of the public.

Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, resulting in it taking longer

For a short period after supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

For updates on the maintenance work (and location of tankers where applicable), follow @CityofCTAlerts which is a City of Cape Town Twitter account.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:

Store enough water in clean sealed containers that will last for your use during this period.

Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.

Zero-Pressure Tests and Step Tests

Sonstraal Heights, Vredekloof Heights and Belami Ridge

Zero pressure tests will be conducted on the main water supply to the Sonstraal Heights, Vredekloof Heights and Belami Ridge areas. This work will result in the disruption of the water supply in these areas on Thursday, 16 February 2023, from 21:00 overnight until 04:00 on Friday 17 February 2023.

Bo Oakdale, Bellville Park, Ridgeworth, Willowbridge and Tygervalley

Zero pressure tests will be conducted on the main water supply to the Bo Oakdale, Bellville Park, Ridgeworth, Willowbridge and Tygervalley areas. This work will disrupt the water supply to this area on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, from 21:00 overnight until 04:00 on Thursday 16 February 2023.

Pressure Reduction Valve (PRV) installation

• Constantia Heights

A pressure reduction valve (PRV) will be installed on the main water supply to the Constantia Heights area. This work will result in the disruption of the water supply in this area on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, from 10:00 until 16:00.

Zero-pressure testing and step testing are part of the installation process for pressure management technology. Tests are done in advance to see if any unmapped inflows need to be considered before installing smart pressure-reducing valves.

In these affected areas, some residents may experience low water pressure, and some may have no water coming out of their taps for some time during this overnight testing period. It is not possible to predict which areas or streets will experience disruptions.

Residents are kindly advised to store water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.

This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy. Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage.

Maintenance Work – Meter replacements

• Manenberg

The water supply main to the Manenberg area will be shut off on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, from 21:00 overnight until 04:00 on Thursday 16 February 2023. This will enable the safe replacement of a bulk water meter on the main water supply. An alternative water supply will be rerouted to the area and will possibly result in lower than usual water supply pressure in the area.

Maintenance Work – Pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements

• Part of Kuils River

Tests will be done on the water supply main to Soneike 1, Soneike 2 and Soneike Mall as well as Gladioli Street, Joli Drive, Grayling Street and Piet My Vrou Street from 10:00 on Tuesday 14 February 2023 overnight until 10:00 on Wednesday 2023. Lower water pressure may be expected in these areas during this period. The tests will provide an indication of how best to reroute water to these areas when the stormwater system will be upgraded as part of the expansion of the Amandel bridge in the next few weeks. The water supply network at the bridge has already been upgraded to accommodate the bridge expansion and the tests will provide options to reduce water supply disruptions during that project

• The Vines in Constantia and parts of Diep River and Bergvliet

The water supply main will be shut off to The Vines in Constantia and parts of Diep River and Bergvliet along Main Road and immediate surrounds on Wednesday, 15 February 2023, from 21:00 overnight until 04:00 on Thursday 16 February 2023. This will enable the safe replacement of three faulty control valves on the main water supply and will result in the disruption of the water supply to these areas during this period. A water tanker will roam in the area to provide residents with water for domestic consumption during this period.

• Paarden Eiland and Cape Town Foreshore

The water supply into Paarden Eiland and the Cape Town Foreshore will be shut off from Saturday, 18 February 2023, at 14:00 until Sunday, 19 February 2023, at 23:59. This 34 hour shut down will allow for the urgent, safe repairs of the 915mm diameter Bulk Water pipeline near Paarden Eiland. It will result in no water supply to Paarden Eiland and the Cape Town Foreshore areas and may also result in reduced water pressure in surrounding areas.

This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance programme which ensures future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.

The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused.

2023-02-11T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#42305b06-67ec-4657-9272-641a0ea14201;L0|#042305b06-67ec-4657-9272-641a0ea14201|water supply;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#0c4188de-8fd0-4c65-ad50-f8de6fb0dd9c;L0|#00c4188de-8fd0-4c65-ad50-f8de6fb0dd9c|repairs and maintenance;GP0|#352cb5da-6a34-4bf4-959d-14dc8987a2b4;L0|#0352cb5da-6a34-4bf4-959d-14dc8987a2b4|water and sanitation10
