Update on major repairs along Kloof Road

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas and Ward Councillor, Nicola Jowell, accompanied the Roads Infrastructure Management Director, Hilton Scholtz, to the project site along Kloof Road which requires major repair work since the slope failure occurred along the road in September last year. The City would like to remind residents that the road may be closed for the next 20 months, given the scale and complexities of the project. ‘We appreciate the understanding and support we have received from the community thus far. This section of Kloof Road is unfortunately deemed unsafe for use and requires major repairs. Residents and visitors are advised to stay clear of this portion of the road. We have to ensure the safety of the community as a major slope failure occurred along the road in September last year; a portion of the road itself has been damaged and washed away,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The mountainside appears to be rock, but is in fact decomposed granite that crumbles easily, which makes working on the project high risk and requires meticulous stabilisation.
To date, the City has appointed a consulting specialist who has completed a topography survey of the area and is currently drilling for further soil sampling. Once these samples have been tested and analysed the proposed concept design plan will be finalised and submitted to the City by mid-June 2024.
‘Once we have a concept design, we will start the environmental process. Timelines on this project are very fluid, as a lot depends on the design and the actions triggered in terms of the National Environmental Management Act. We will appoint the environmental consultant in parallel to the detail design process to ensure that they are on board and can start as soon as the design is complete,’ said Councillor Quintas.
Road users are advised to keep on using alternative routes, including Geneva Drive and Segdemoor Road in Camps Bay – both roads join Lower Kloof Road.
The City is continuously engaging SANParks who is the owner of the land below the slip.
