Talks continue towards cessation of SANTACO taxi strike | Talks continue towards cessation of SANTACO taxi strike | | |
The City of Cape Town is awaiting SANTACO’s decision on an end to strike action following the taxi body’s attendance at talks by invitation of the Western Cape Government and the City this afternoon.

|
‘We are hopeful of an imminent end to strike action having made reasonable and considerate proposals which SANTACO have pledged to consult their team on. Our first consideration will always be the safety of commuters, and making our roads safer at all times. Our proposals are made in this spirit, and we hope that SANTACO will end the strike action and return to negotiations so that resolutions can be found without compromising the principle of the rule of law. We are confident that constructive engagements with industry can achieve a shared understanding of the law, including which offences the law regards as impoundable or fineable,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

All impoundments are effected in line with applicable legislation, with specific legal mechanisms for the release of impounded vehicles to which the City is bound. The law applies at all times and officials may not turn a blind eye to important road safety legislation.

‘The minibus-taxi industry plays a vital role and is a major public transport stakeholder. We know from the City’s latest Comprehensive Integrated Public Transport Plan (CITP) for 2022 that 22% of commuters in Cape Town make use of minibus-taxis, with about 830 000 passenger trips made per day. We also know that the far majority of public transport users – in fact, it is 95% - are people from low- to middle-income households. It is in all of our interest to resolve the challenges, and for SANTACO to end the strike. We are looking forward to more constructive engagements with their leadership,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

| 2023-08-09T22:00:00Z | GP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#386e6d11-1c73-4d63-9956-3cc3eab4415f;L0|#0386e6d11-1c73-4d63-9956-3cc3eab4415f|public transport;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#eae2bb96-9b34-484b-a738-b70be572ab41;L0|#0eae2bb96-9b34-484b-a738-b70be572ab41|minibus taxi operators;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#f1734e52-da42-4cfc-a3a5-3514093d3513;L0|#0f1734e52-da42-4cfc-a3a5-3514093d3513|roads;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | 0 |
