Staggering increase in drunk driving arrests continuesStaggering increase in drunk driving arrests continues<img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/Law-Enforcement-Security-Header.png" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><div>Last week, the arrests doubled from the previous week, and this week the trend continued, with a near doubling of arrests yet again.<br></div><p><br></p><div>A total of 127 arrests were made for drunk driving, up from the previous week’s 69, which had nearly doubled from the 36 arrests the week before that.</div><div><br></div><div>The City’s Traffic Service made 119 arrests of which 105 were for drunk driving and 14 for reckless and negligent driving.</div><div><br></div><div>The other 22 drunk driving arrests were made by Metro Police officers.</div><div><br></div><div>‘The carnage on our roads, our enforcement and numerous appeals are clearly not deterring drivers hell bent on getting behind the wheel drunk. It is disheartening to see such absolute disregard for the law. Officers will continue to arrest those drivers who clearly don’t care for their own lives or other road users. </div><div><br></div><div>‘Sadly, these statistics are likely to be par for the course as we head towards the year-end holidays. It can be a joyous time for everyone, but if you’re intent on breaking the law, it won’t be all that jolly behind bars. Do the right thing and don’t drink and drive,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. </div><div><br></div><div><strong>LAW ENFORCEMENT</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Officers made 152 arrests for various offences including possession of drugs, firearms, imitation firearms and other dangerous weapons. </div><div><br></div><div>Of these, 122 arrests were made by Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officers.</div><div><br></div><div>They also issued 4 111 notices for various by-law offences.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Officers made 105 arrests and issued 2 084 notices for traffic and by-law transgressions.</div><div><br></div><div>They also confiscated numerous quantities of mandrax, tik and dagga. </div><div><br></div><div>In Milnerton yesterday, Sunday 9 October, a 35-year-old man was arrested at a vehicle checkpoint in Koeberg Road for the possession of a fraudulent driver’s license. </div><div><br></div><div>He was taken to Milnerton police station for further investigation.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE</strong></div><div>The Centre recorded a decrease in the number of overall incidents reported for the weekend, as outlined below.  </div><div><br></div><div></div><div><table cellspacing="0" width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-default"><tbody><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:33.3333%;"><strong>Category</strong></td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:33.3333%;"><strong>30 Sept – 2 Oct</strong></td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:33.3333%;"><strong>7 – 9 Oct</strong></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Overall number of incidents</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">2 024</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">1 747</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Assault (physical and other)</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">207</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">132</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Motor vehicle accidents</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">58</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">39</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Pedestrian/vehicle accidents</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">17</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">19<br></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>End<br></div><p><br></p>2022-10-09T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#550cea01-5fec-45fb-8509-f49cfc36c0e0;L0|#0550cea01-5fec-45fb-8509-f49cfc36c0e0|Safety;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#4bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec;L0|#04bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec|law enforcement;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#7cc7a47a-7915-4274-a19e-e977c5a945e0;L0|#07cc7a47a-7915-4274-a19e-e977c5a945e0|traffic;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
