Spring into fun with the City’s holiday programmes <p>​</p><span><p>'While this holiday is shorter than others, our Recreation and Parks Department has packed in many activities for all ages. The recreation programmes will help stave off boredom and help learners keep the forward momentum for when they do return to school for the last term,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.</p><p>The department's School Holiday Programme is a structured recreation programme targeted at pre-school and primary school children, as well as high school youth. <br></p><p><br></p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/DSC_5224.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:872px;" /> </figure></span><span><p>It offers children and youth a variety of fun and engaging sport and recreation activities, keeping them positively occupied during the holiday period. </p><p> </p><p>The department will collaborate with Sub Councils, Ward Councillors and others to contribute to the success of the upcoming programme.</p><p> </p><p>This year, the Term three holiday programme will be offered from Friday, 29 September to Monday 9, October 2023, at more than 73 City recreational venues.</p><p> </p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/Libee%20and%20kids%201.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:1898px;" /> </figure></span><span><p>These include community centres, sports grounds, public parks and green spaces and resorts. </p><p> </p><p>Daily activities begin as early as 08:00 and end in the late afternoon, with some facilities ending activities as late as 20:00 to accommodate older youth. </p><p> </p><p>This holiday's theme is Sport and Indigenous Games in celebration of Heritage Month.</p><p> </p><p>'The theme is intended to recognise our rich heritage through sport and traditional games, and is aimed at encouraging our young people to learn more about their history while being entertained,' said Councillor Van der Ross.</p><p> </p><p>Activities mostly include both indoor and outdoor recreational games and playing sports such as soccer, netball, hockey, tennis, rugby and volleyball. Indigenous games include suikerkaskenadas, ncuva, kgati, morabaraba and dibeke. </p><p> </p><p>Fitness activities such as dance and aerobics are on offer for youth, while younger children have the opportunity to get messy with recreational arts and crafts and enjoy fun games such as giant snakes and ladders, circle games and outdoor games such as egg and spoon races. Sports tournaments include e-games, table tennis, soccer, futsal, netball, volleyball, drafts, board and table games such as pool and dominoes.<br></p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/SALW%20Integrated%20Programe%20-%2018%20March%202019%20%2816%29.JPG" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:949px;" /> </figure>​​</span><p>As an additional bonus to the programme, the Recreation and Parks Department will be employing 106 community members as Expanded Public Works Programme staff to enhance the implementation of recreation programmes at 78 Recreation and Parks facilities throughout the city, fostering community engagement and development.</p><p> </p><p>The City's libraries will also host a number of events to keep the little ones busy.</p><p> </p><p>Parents and guardians are encouraged to take advantage of these programmes to keep their children engaged and active during the holiday season.</p><p> </p><p>'These initiatives reflect the City's dedication to promoting community engagement, personal development and overall well-being among our youth.
