Solid Waste Services disrupted in areas affected by unrest until further notice
Solid Waste services have been disrupted due to protest action, which saw three City vehicles attacked and stoned in volatile areas overnight.

One vehicle was set alight last night, Tuesday 1 June, in Philippi. This morning, Wednesday 2 June, one vehicle was hijacked in Khayelitsha and one was torched in Gugulethu. Thankfully the staff were not injured, but are traumatised and have lost their valuables. Counselling is available to staff. SAPS has cautioned the Solid Waste Department’s staff not to leave the Klipfontein depot as City vehicles are being targeted. Contractor vehicles have also been recalled from volatile areas today.

The disrupted services include refuse collection; cleansing (litter picking, clearing of illegal dumping and door-to-door refuse collection); drop-off facilities; and refuse transfer station services.

Residents in the following areas are advised there will be no refuse removed today due to the unrest:

• Gugulethu South
• White City
• NY108
• Gugulethu North
• KTC
• Nyanga
• Mfuleni ext 6
• Philippi East
• Luzuku Park
• Phola Park
• Browns Farm
• The Leagues/ Heinz Park
• Crossroads

The department remains guided by law enforcement agencies and will activate services again as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

Residents are also advised that the collections service throughout the city will not continue beyond 18:00, as staff who have managed to get to work this morning need to return to volatile areas or travel through them to get back home.

The City sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused by the non-collection of refuse, and will make every effort to clear the backlog as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. We ask that residents please do not resort to illegal dumping during this time.

Thank you for your understanding. Residents will be informed when solid waste services continue.
2021-06-01T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#f2666518-9a9f-4cb8-b9b5-555137fea74c;L0|#0f2666518-9a9f-4cb8-b9b5-555137fea74c|refuse collection;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#3d21d17b-73c7-4f02-a9f2-b54c25b04484;L0|#03d21d17b-73c7-4f02-a9f2-b54c25b04484|refuse removal;GP0|#c68339a9-4d36-46d9-b104-39c21214789e;L0|#0c68339a9-4d36-46d9-b104-39c21214789e|protest;GPP|#d63bd629-d5be-4620-9b73-8aad5076677510
