policing collaboration between SAPS and local authorities, with the City of
Cape Town ready to help SAPS fight crime should more policing powers be
devolved to municipal officers.

|
'The high levels of crime evident in the quarterly stats clearly show the need for more collaboration between SAPS and our City officers. We are doing everything possible to help SAPS fight crime within the policing powers currently devolved to us, but there's a lot more we could do, especially with criminal investigative powers. This will enable us to build prosecution-ready case dockets, especially for gang, gun and drug crime.

'These powers can be extended via a simple declaration, as was done to an extent in 2018, and a SAPS Act amendment. We continue to call on the President, Justice Minister and Police Minister to do so. This is not about politics, but about the many Capetonians who live in daily fear of crime especially in gang, gun and drug hotspots.

'The City is encouraged by a near 50% decrease in murders in Kraaifontein year-on-year, and a 26% decline in Philippi East, which are both LEAP deployment areas.

'We continue to crowd resources into crime hotspots in the top 30 stations nationally for violent crime. The City has passed a record R5,8bn Safety and Security budget for the new financial year which commenced last month.

'This includes R860 million over three years in crime-fighting technology such as CCTV, drones, body and dashcams, aerial surveillance, and gunshot detection tech. This will complement the 1 200 law enforcement officers deployed to crime hotspots under the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) together with the Western Cape Government,' said Ald JP Smith, Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security.

End

| 2023-08-17T22:00:00Z | GP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#550cea01-5fec-45fb-8509-f49cfc36c0e0;L0|#0550cea01-5fec-45fb-8509-f49cfc36c0e0|Safety;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#4bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec;L0|#04bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec|law enforcement;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | 0 |
