Planned water supply maintenance from 14 - 18 OctoberPlanned water supply maintenance from 14 - 18 October
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruptions. This critical maintenance work is done on our water-supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Residents are advised to store enough water in advance, as a precautionary measure. Water should ideally be stored in clean, sealed containers.

Planned maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:

Bloekombos and Wallacedene
The Glen Garry Reservoir has been shut down from Monday, 30 September 2024, until Friday, 18 October 2024, for essential annual cleaning and maintenance. This process is critical to ensuring the continued quality and safety of our water supply. During this period, an alternate water supply is being rerouted to the Glen Garry area, but at lower than usual pressure. The reservoir levels for the Bloekombos and Wallacedene areas are currently under severe strain, and continued high water usage will lead to an unsustainable supply. Residents and businesses are urgently requested to reduce their water consumption during this period to prevent the risk of the reservoirs running dry, especially during the current hot weather conditions.

Bloekombos, Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, North Pine and Brackenfell
The Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant will be shut down from 00:00 until 24:00 on Monday, 14 October 2024 so that urgent maintenance work at the water purification plant can be done. Residents and businesses in the affected areas need to reduce their consumption during this period. The Drakenstein and Stellenbosch Municipalities, as well as private consumers along the Wemmershoek pipeline have been notified to make alternate arrangements.

Strand
The water supply to this area will be shut off from 08:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 15 October 2024. This is so the maintenance team can do a water supply infrastructure upgrade and safely install seven critical control valves on the water supply network in this area. The impacted area could unfortunately not be reduced due to a defective control valve. Affected consumers are kindly requested to store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance.

Sea Point
The 100mm diameter water main in Church Street, Sea Point will be shut down from 09:00 until 18:00 on Tuesday, 15 October 2024 to do a new connection to the pipeline. This will result in the disruption of the water supply along Church Street between Regent Road and Kloof Road during this period. Affected consumers are kindly requested to store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance.

Heinz Park in Philippi
A test shut off will be done on the 300mm diameter water main to Heinz Park, The Leagues and the SAPS College in Philippi from 09:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday, 15 October 2024. This is so the maintenance team can assess the affected areas prior to the actual shutdown to do a network upgrade, which will be planned from 09:00 until 18:00 on Thursday, 17 October 2024. Affected consumers are kindly requested to store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance.

Sea Point
A test shut off will be done on the 150mm diameter water main in the area bounded by Main Road, London Road, Firmount Road and Bellevue Road as well as the 225mm diameter water supply bounded by Beach Road, Milton Road and Hall Road in Sea Point from 09:00 until 16:00 on Wednesday, 16 October 2024. This is so the maintenance team can assess the affected areas prior to the actual shutdown to do a network upgrade, which will be planned from 09:00 until 18:00 on Tuesday, 22 October 2024. Affected consumers are kindly requested to store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance.

Philippi and Hanover Park
The 300mm diameter main water supply pipeline in Govan Mbeki Road, Philippi will be shut down from 08:00 until 19:00 on Friday, 18 October 2024 to upgrade the water supply infrastructure and to accommodate the current road infrastructure upgrade in the area. This will result in the disruption of water supply to the area between Springfield Road and Heinz Road as well as the immediate surrounds during this period. Affected residents and businesses in this area are also advised to store water in clean sealed containers in advance.

This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.

The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience.

What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:
1. Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
2. All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
3. Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
4. For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

For updates on the maintenance work (and location of tankers where applicable), follow @CityofCTAlerts which is a City of Cape Town X account.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:
1. Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period.
2. Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.

2024-10-10T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#42305b06-67ec-4657-9272-641a0ea14201;L0|#042305b06-67ec-4657-9272-641a0ea14201|water supply;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#0c4188de-8fd0-4c65-ad50-f8de6fb0dd9c;L0|#00c4188de-8fd0-4c65-ad50-f8de6fb0dd9c|repairs and maintenance;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#d45c4978-b3f4-402c-b248-6ebd1a0065ec;L0|#0d45c4978-b3f4-402c-b248-6ebd1a0065ec|Water and sanitation directorate;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
