Not only do they put their lives on the line as we saw in the latest example in Mfuleni, that also led to the recovery of prohibited firearms and ammunition, but drug dealers too are becoming increasingly crafty at hiding their stashes, from toilet bowls to ceilings, inside stoves and now even vacuum cleaners. However, our staff are up to the task, as the confiscations in the last week have shown, and we commend them for it,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Traffic officers recorded 74 007 traffic violations – 55% of them were speeding offences – impounded 136 vehicles and executed 1 784 warrants of arrest.

They also made 42 arrests – 32 for driving under the influence, three for reckless and negligent driving and seven on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, false documentation and assaulting an officer.

The past weekend, the Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 867 incidents, including 99 fires, 94 cases of assault, 31cases of domestic violence and 44 road accidents.

Residents are reminded to phone 021 480 77 00 from a cell phone and 107 from a landline to report any criminal activity or emergency.

End

2024-01-14T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#3bd13869-3207-4532-9db7-a4ca95867a50;L0|#03bd13869-3207-4532-9db7-a4ca95867a50|JP Smith;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GPP|#3f57ea8a-3adb-4a8f-bb3a-0a20a62c7fe9;GP0|#26eb1cce-7a65-4510-a4ed-6d56da219306;L0|#026eb1cce-7a65-4510-a4ed-6d56da219306|Metro Police Department;GP0|#4bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec;L0|#04bcb251f-1166-4a1c-8ee5-d33721046dec|law enforcement;GP0|#1590d31e-7ad8-4e2e-9ac0-344400d98f63;L0|#01590d31e-7ad8-4e2e-9ac0-344400d98f63|traffic services;GP0|#5615f8a8-1812-4aba-8cfc-472bd2b5937e;L0|#05615f8a8-1812-4aba-8cfc-472bd2b5937e|PECC10
