We pray for your strength and also for justice.</div><div> </div><div>‘This brazen and ruthless mass shooting was well-organised, well-armed and undertaken by criminals who at this stage, do not fear the police. This situation must change by ensuring arrests and convictions.</div><div> </div><div>‘I call on the SAPS to spare no resource in making arrests. There simply must be valuable information within the community on how to trace these gangsters and ensure justice for the young lives lost so tragically.</div><div> </div><div>‘We have seen in the past that this type of crime is sometimes linked to local extortion syndicates. Anyone with information may contact the City’s anti-extortion hotline on 0800 00 6992. Tip-offs can be anonymous, and the City will ensure that all information is directed to supporting the SAPS investigation,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.</div><div><br></div><div>‘As we grapple with the devastating impact of the recent mass shooting in Khayelitsha, we must confront the root causes facilitating extortion in communities across South Africa: the lack of detective resources, the slow pace of modernisation within the South African police service, and the erosion of community trust in the police,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.</div><div> </div><div>‘The Safety & Security Directorate has often called on SAPS for a stronger working relationship with the City's investigative and information management units to speed up the gains made in shutting down criminal extortion syndicates. I repeat that demand to SAPS as all our people and all our communities in Cape Town need to be safe and it is clear that SAPS needs all the available assistance to achieve this and bring down these syndicates.</div><div><br></div><div>‘I also reiterate our previous calls for the devolution of investigative and crime intelligence powers to the City's enforcement services to allow us to step up where the national government has let SAPS down with inadequate resources and capacity. Allow the City to step up and help.’</div><div><br></div> | 2024-06-09T22:00:00Z | GP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#b480eb1b-cfa8-45cf-ab3d-21f848f482e9;L0|#0b480eb1b-cfa8-45cf-ab3d-21f848f482e9|safety and security;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#90b49a62-96e2-436a-9c68-187c9ab33534;L0|#090b49a62-96e2-436a-9c68-187c9ab33534|Mayor;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | 0 |
