Let’s ACT Protect your power - community support needed to protect electricity infrastructure Let’s ACT Protect your power - community support needed to protect electricity infrastructure
Streetlight repairs are being attended to in Leonsdale and Clarkes Estate. The City calls for communities across the metro to help keep the lights on and to adopt the electrical infrastructure in their neighbourhoods by keeping an eye on it and reporting any criminals stealing or vandalising community infrastructure.

Work is ongoing across the city to replace constantly vandalised street lighting infrastructure, an Energy Safety Unit is in place to help with monitoring and patrolling, as well as protecting staff in volatile areas while they do repairs. Other interventions and innovations are also being carried out and investigated, but teamwork is needed.

'City officials have carried out repairs to areas across the metro, most recently in the Clarkes Estate area. Teams will today, 23 April 2024, return to the Leonsdale area to attend to damaged infrastructure. Due to the large volumes and impact of the vandalised and stolen electricity infrastructure, the response to repair or re-instate the street lighting infrastructure equipment is taking longer. Reported individual street lights not working that are not as a result of vandalism, cable theft or illegal connections are attended to within 48 hours as capacity allows.

'The City has attended to hundreds of electricity vandalism-related faults in recent months and disconnects illegal connections to City infrastructure across the metro on a regular basis.

'The City apologises for any inconvenience caused when streetlights are out, especially due to perpetual theft of cables and vandalism of the infrastructure. Often, as soon as our teams fix damaged streetlights, they are vandalised again.

'We urge residents to help us protect our community lighting assets by reporting vandalism, theft and illegal connections to the authorities. Let's ACT and stand together to protect our power,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.

Any suspicious behaviour must be reported to the City's law enforcement agencies or the City's Fraud Hotline on 0800 1100 77 or to the lead crime prevention authority, the South African Police Service (SAPS).

End

2024-04-22T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#41c0ef91-d4e9-4224-b6eb-0c50982319bd;L0|#041c0ef91-d4e9-4224-b6eb-0c50982319bd|Leonsdale;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#fc0a19bf-6a9b-42af-bc90-8a0d4b9f4eac;L0|#0fc0a19bf-6a9b-42af-bc90-8a0d4b9f4eac|vandalism;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
