Join in the Great Southern Bioblitz!Join in the Great Southern Bioblitz!<img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/City%20news.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><p>​<strong><em><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"century gothic", sans-serif;">Cape Town is participating in this year’s Great Southern Bioblitz challenge alongside other cities in the southern hemisphere in an effort to record the local diversity of plant and animal life. Entry to the City’s nature reserves will be free from 28 to 31 October 2022 while the challenge is on. </span></em></strong><br></p><p>​</p><p>The Great Southern Bioblitz is an interactive environmental data collection challenge that takes place annually during springtime in the southern hemisphere, and is aimed at recording the vast biodiversity of our local environment. Using the same model as the City Nature Challenge, cities in the southern hemisphere compete against each other to see who can record the widest range of plant and animal species during the course of the challenge, which will run from 28 – 31 October 2022.</p><p> </p><p>Everyone is encouraged to join in – simply enter your plant and animal sightings on the iNaturalist app or website, and they will automatically be included in the challenge. To see how Cape Town is doing, visit <a href="https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/great-southern-bioblitz-2022-cape-town">Cape Town's project page on the iNaturalist website</a> and enter your plant and animal sightings on the page. Entry to the City's <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/Explore%20and%20enjoy/See-all-City-facilities/Our-recreational-facilities/Nature%20reserves">nature reserves</a> will be free for the duration of the challenge.</p><p> </p><p>'The Great Southern Bioblitz is a great way for residents to showcase the amazing natural heritage that exists in Cape Town, which is home to its own unique biodiversity with fauna and flora that are found nowhere else.
