Impact of strike on Waste Services | Impact of strike on Waste Services | | |
Urban Waste Management is working to minimise disruption of services due to the taxi strike that has affected staff’s ability to get to work. This is affecting cleansing, refuse collection schedules, and operations at landfills and transfer stations. Road closures due to protests will also affect the movement of solid waste vehicles.

|

Every effort is being made to ensure services can continue where it is possible and safe to do so. Should services need to be withdrawn temporarily for safety reasons, the City will resume work in affected areas as soon as possible.

Areas where refuse collection has been affected so far, as they are inaccessible, include but are not limited to the following:

Dunoon

Khayelitsha

Nyanga

Gugulethu

Browns Farm/Phillipi

Lwandle

Mfuleni

Lusaka

Kiki

Enkanini

Any remaining backlogs in these areas will be dealt with on Saturday. Residents are advised to liaise with their local councillors for the latest updates as service information will be provided to the respective Sub-councils by 15:30 this afternoon.

All recycling drop-offs have managed to open this morning, albeit with limited staff. Drop-off facilities will be closing earlier today to accommodate staff travelling. All larger drop-off facilities will be closing at 16:30 going forward until the situation normalises.

We urge residents not to dump illegally if their services are affected. Please keep waste in wheelie bins as far as possible until the backlog can be cleared. We urge residents to assist us by cleaning their areas where possible as well as reporting those who dump their waste illegally at 0800 110077. For every fine and conviction, we will offer you a reward from R1000 up to R5000.

We thank you for your cooperation during this challenging time.

End

| 2023-08-03T22:00:00Z | GP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#36a1168d-a508-46b6-bc80-b2e9f2f35a0b;L0|#036a1168d-a508-46b6-bc80-b2e9f2f35a0b|Community and Society;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#30dd8f25-92b1-4698-88d7-6dcdeb3d56c1;L0|#030dd8f25-92b1-4698-88d7-6dcdeb3d56c1|waste and cleaning;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | 0 |
