Historic moment as Luyolo land claims beneficiaries receive homes in Simon’s Town development <span><p>The City's Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, and officials in the Human Settlements Directorate celebrated with some of the very first Luyolo land claimants and their families. </p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:802px;" /> </figure></span><span><p>'This morning we are honoured to share this very special moment with eight more Luyolo land claimant beneficiaries, who suffered as a result of forcible removals from this Simon's Town area under apartheid legislation. The City has built the 100 units for the Luyolo community and it is a privilege for us to bring about real change, and this flagship project is an example of our redress and restitution in action. Over recent months, we have handed over opportunities as they are completed, and we are looking forward to sharing many more special moments with beneficiaries as the project progresses.</p><p> </p><p>'Progress on site is on track and the project is expected to be completed in June 2026, if all goes according to plan.  We thank all teams, the community and beneficiaries for their commitment to this project and we are looking forward to welcoming our future beneficiaries in the weeks to come,' said Councillor Pophaim. </p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:996px;" /> </figure></span><span><p><strong>About Dido Valley</strong></p><p><strong>100 restitution homes for Luyolo community in terms of restitution processes </strong></p><p>This mega project contains a restitution component, which will enable the descendants and even some of the original Luyolo community members to return to Simon's Town. </p><p>The Luyolo land claimant beneficiaries were forcibly removed from Simon's Town in the mid-1960s under the apartheid Group Areas Act. These beneficiaries were moved to Gugulethu. </p><p><strong>Redhill community – Breaking New Ground homes in terms of subsidy housing provision </strong></p><p>The majority of the beneficiaries for the Breaking New Ground component of the project come from the Redhill informal settlement, which is located between Simon's Town and Scarborough and their allocation is in line with housing allocation policies. </p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img src="" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:884px;" /> </figure>​​</span><p><strong>Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
