Heavy weather caps a busy week for Safety and Security

'It has been an incredibly busy week for our Directorate, particularly the emergency services. Over the Easter weekend, we had numerous fires, and the coordination of relief efforts was barely completed when we had another big fire in Nyanga, and now the very wide-ranging weather impacts. It is a mammoth undertaking, and I want to commend not only our staff, but all services in general for the hard work. A cursory glance at emergency call statistics over the weekend tells the story – a near 100% increase in fire-related incidents, and 66 reports of trees obstructing roadways, compared to just four last weekend.

'I also want to appeal to the public to do their bit. Where possible, make sure that your property is secure, take extreme caution on the roads in particular, and if you are by the means, please make a donation to the many NGOs in our city who are doing incredible work on the humanitarian relief front,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The City's Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 913 incidents over the weekend.

Among these were 161 fires (87 last weekend), 727 medical incidents – down from 977, 118 cases of assault (261), 49 domestic violence cases (79), and 62 road accidents (80), with 66 reports of trees obstructing roadways (4).
In general enforcement, the City's agencies made 315 arrests and issued 62 758 fines for various offences.

The Law Enforcement Department arrested 196 suspects and issued 3 255 notices for various by-law transgressions.

Metro Police officers made 64 arrests, including four for drunk driving, and issued 3 155 fines for various traffic and by-law transgressions.

The City's Traffic Service arrested 55 motorists in the past week – 43 for driving under the influence, two for reckless and negligent driving and 10 others on various charges.

Officers also executed 1 475 warrants of arrest, impounded 143 vehicles and recorded 56 348 offences.

End

2024-04-07T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#cb2fbda2-f27c-4834-be95-7f049c8640b3;L0|#0cb2fbda2-f27c-4834-be95-7f049c8640b3|disaster management;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#78273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255;L0|#078273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255|Metro police;GP0|#451a6e42-0a8c-4409-88a8-da1f16d8f0bb;L0|#0451a6e42-0a8c-4409-88a8-da1f16d8f0bb|emergency centre10
