Heavy weather caps a busy week for Safety and Security | Heavy weather caps a busy week for Safety and Security | | |
The City’s emergency and enforcement services are being put to the test by an intense cut-off low pressure system that has been in place since Saturday, 6 April. Impacts are varied and include localised flooding, wind damage to infrastructure as well as fires. On the enforcement side in the past week, staff made more than 300 arrests.

|

'It has been an incredibly busy week for our Directorate, particularly the emergency services. Over the Easter weekend, we had numerous fires, and the coordination of relief efforts was barely completed when we had another big fire in Nyanga, and now the very wide-ranging weather impacts. It is a mammoth undertaking, and I want to commend not only our staff, but all services in general for the hard work. A cursory glance at emergency call statistics over the weekend tells the story – a near 100% increase in fire-related incidents, and 66 reports of trees obstructing roadways, compared to just four last weekend.

Where possible, make sure that your property is secure, take extreme caution on the roads in particular, and if you are by the means, please make a donation to the many NGOs in our city who are doing incredible work on the humanitarian relief front,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The City's Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 913 incidents over the weekend.
