Focus on street lighting repairs and maintenance in Area South
Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen and officials from Area South visited Westridge, Mitchells Plain to inspect recent repairs to streetlights.

‘Westridge and the surrounding suburbs have been hit hard by criminals and this has had a severe impact on residents. We thank residents for being our eyes and ears and for reporting all faults and suspicious incidents to us.

‘Our teams in all areas in the metro are working around the clock to attend to service requests and the related backlogs. Unfortunately, the Mitchells Plain district is one of the worst affected districts, with many incidents being repeated incidents of vandalism and theft. Sadly, as soon as our teams fix damaged streetlights, they are vandalised shortly thereafter.

‘We have a number of new and continued interventions in place including private security patrols in areas, we have appointed more contractors and artisans to assist us with service requests and repairs, and we are investigating more advanced solutions to assist the teams on the ground.

‘Over the last five years, we have seen an exponential increase in the number of incidents and the sheer volumes have had a major impact on repair turnaround times. The City cannot win this fight against vandalism alone and we once again ask residents to support us by reporting electricity infrastructure crime to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the City,’ said Councillor Beverley Van Reenen.

Streetlights

The City is responsible for 245 000 streetlights in the metro and through our enforcement agencies we are doing all we can, within our mandate, to address theft and the serious vandalism of our critical infrastructure.

Where streetlight repair delays occur due to high electricity request volumes, as is currently being experienced, we ask residents to be patient with us while our teams attend to it as soon as possible.

Area South at a glance (January 2023 to 13 February 2024)

• Mitchells Plain – metro vandalism hotspot 10 291 fault requests - 31% of these pertain to repeated vandalised infrastructure like poles and theft

• Gugulethu

7 402 fault requests – 25% pertain to repeated vandalised infrastructure and theft

• Wynberg

8 096 fault requests – 10% pertains to repeated vandalised infrastructure and theft

• Muizenberg

4 154 fault requests – 15% pertains to repeated vandalised infrastructure and theft

Report all suspicious activities at or near electricity infrastructure to the City’s law enforcement agencies or the City’s Fraud Hotline on 0800 1100 77 or to the SAPS.

The SAPS remains the lead authority in crime prevention.

End

Note to broadcasters: an audio clip is available for download:

2024-02-28T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#fc0a19bf-6a9b-42af-bc90-8a0d4b9f4eac;L0|#0fc0a19bf-6a9b-42af-bc90-8a0d4b9f4eac|vandalism;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#3993dc6c-8b2f-481d-b8f9-84452d43bbba;L0|#03993dc6c-8b2f-481d-b8f9-84452d43bbba|streetlighting;GP0|#0c4188de-8fd0-4c65-ad50-f8de6fb0dd9c;L0|#00c4188de-8fd0-4c65-ad50-f8de6fb0dd9c|repairs and maintenance10
