There was also a slight drop in the overall number of arrests our agencies made in the past week, but officers still had their hands full. While arrests and other indicators are measures of success, so too are the hundreds or thousands of incidents prevented through proactive patrols and assistance, whether that be point duty or assisting stranded motorists and visible patrols in communities, at public amenities and events,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

In general enforcement efforts, Metro Police officers made 96 arrests, including 40 for the possession of drugs. They also issued 2 245 notices for traffic and by-law offences.

On Saturday, 3 January 2026, officers recovered two firearms in Hanover Park in separate incidents (pictured). Two suspects, aged 20 and 38 were detained at Philippi SAPS.

Law Enforcement Officers made 115 arrests and issued 5 594 fines.

On the roads, Traffic Officers recorded 55 090 offences, impounded 85 public transport vehicles and executed 642 warrants of arrest.

Officers made 30 arrests of which 26 were for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The public is reminded to please report emergencies or any suspicious and/or criminal activities to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700, and to provide detailed information such as the time, exact address and a short description.

End
2026-01-04T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#6dab4711-dfd7-42c6-853f-bcb7a6227420;L0|#06dab4711-dfd7-42c6-853f-bcb7a6227420|law enforcement and security;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#51755dd8-7376-4d07-b6e1-c8eb15809074;L0|#051755dd8-7376-4d07-b6e1-c8eb15809074|traffic enforcement;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#78273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255;L0|#078273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255|Metro police;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
