Dunoon Library construction gets off the ground

© City of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town today marked the beginning of the construction of the Dunoon Library. The library is being built near the existing community centre, which will create an information hub in the area.

The project is being co-funded by the Western Cape Government and the City, to the tune of R39,3 million. It is expected that the library will be completed by mid-2018.

The City is responsible for the execution of the project and the running of the library once completed, with operational costs provided by the Western Cape Government.
The library will be a three-storey facility, with the first two floors housing the main library and the third providing space for a possible community garden or community programmes, weather permitting. The design has been carefully thought through to make sure that this building is environmentally sustainable and maximises space for learning and recreation. It features:

• an air-conditioning system that uses less energy to cool the building
• vertical green walls that can be used for growing plants or herbs and vegetables
• a great deal of good natural light entering the building
• a special external screen that can be converted into a media/digital screen to be used for outdoor movies or seminars

© City of Cape Town

In addition, the building will feature a total water recycling system, with a 25 000-litre water tank beneath the parking area. Rain water will be collected in the tank to be used for irrigation and flushing toilets. The building will also be fitted with LED lighting and auto sensors, while the roof is designed in a manner that will allow for the addition of photovoltaic panels at a later stage.

‘Gone are the days of four walls and a few windows. This design is out-of-the-box and a very strong indicator that libraries have a place in a world where technology dominates. I am very excited about the promise that this building holds, not just in terms of environmental sustainability, but also to sustain the community. I urge the community to rally around the contractor and help ensure that this project is completed as soon as possible for the benefit of the residents of Dunoon and surrounds,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

The new facility will include a relevant library collection catering to the community’s educational, informational, recreational and social needs. It will also provide a meeting room for the community and library activities, as well as a study area and access to SmartCape facilities for free internet access, email and computer facilities for online resources.

‘Libraries are important spaces in communities. They’re not just places of learning and knowledge, but also spaces for social interaction and they provide an introduction and access to the world – particularly since the introduction of the internet facilities at City libraries. The resources that a library offers expand horizons in a way that nothing else can, and I am immensely proud that we’re finally at the point where we can break ground on yet another library for the residents of Cape Town,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Area North, Councillor Suzette Little.

End
2017-03-15T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#3f0f795e-221c-4d14-b27f-8ca0191f75f6;L0|#03f0f795e-221c-4d14-b27f-8ca0191f75f6|Dunoon information hub;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#f8cc632d-867e-4e66-aff6-f4c7a707e29f;L0|#0f8cc632d-867e-4e66-aff6-f4c7a707e29f|national library week;GP0|#4166117c-f322-4b54-a02d-d025ffafb68a;L0|#04166117c-f322-4b54-a02d-d025ffafb68a|library and information service1
