Deputy Mayor at the Battle of Square Hill Remembrance Ceremony | Deputy Mayor at the Battle of Square Hill Remembrance Ceremony | | <img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/Delville1.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /> | <p>This year marks the 104th anniversary of the commemoration of the Battle of Square Hill and on Sunday, 18 September 2022, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, delivered a keynote speech at the Battle of Square Hill Remembrance Ceremony at the Castle of Good Hope, in Cape Town. <br></p><div><br><br></div><p><br></p> | <p>Alderman Andrews paid tribute to the First and Second Battalion Cape Corps, comprising coloured men who sacrificed their lives to bring about World Peace, during the Battle of Square Hill in Palestine from 19 until 21 September 1918.</p><div><span><figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/Battle1.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:967px;" /> </figure></span>The Battle of Square Hill is recognised as an important battle in the Military History of South Africa and the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) has highlighted it as one of the four major commemorations which form part of its programme for the centenary of the First World War.<br></div><div><span><figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/Battle2.jpg" class="responsive" alt="" style="width:816px;" /> </figure></span>‘Today we honour the men who bravely fought for world peace to the point of losing their lives and sacrificing their families for such a worthy cause. We recognise the role they played and are mindful of their efforts. The fight for peace continues as the world is still in turmoil today. We will continue the fight until people are free to travel and interact with each, without fear.
