Thus, the committee has agreed on an intensive programme which includes visiting nine municipal facilities in the first half of the current financial year.

Ndabeni Workshop, the Fleet Operations Depot and the Fleet Management headquarters were first on the site visit programme given the importance of the services delivered by the Fleet Management Department.

‘The primary function of Fleet Management is to provide comprehensive fleet management services to City’s vehicles, plants, and workshops. The utilisation of the fleet is critical to the City’s capacity to deliver effective services to the public. Fleet influences customer perception, service reliability, cost of service and service provision. As expected, the portfolio committee was happy to note the high standards being maintained at these facilities and highlighted the successful implementation of the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS) and the Pool Asset Management system (PAM),’ said the Chairperson of the Corporate Services Portfolio Committee, Councillor, Fabian A-Sing.

The aim of FMIS is to create awareness and visibility in real-time solutions for effective and efficient fleet management. It ensures accuracy and relevance, and this enables real-time operational and strategic reporting and ultimately better decision-making. It is a fully integrated solution that uploads data automatically and provides a shared platform for the management of all fleet related information, thereby ensuring integrity, efficiency, accuracy, reliability and sustainability.

The PAM system allows departments to hire a City-owned fleet vehicle and enables staff to go online and book a vehicle for a specific timeslot and Fleet Management ensures that a vehicle is made available. PAM enables the City to manage its pool of vehicles accurately and effectively, which will result in the possible right sizing of the fleet, improved utilisation and reduction in the expenditure incurred in the external hiring of vehicles.
