Civic Centre to host Home Affairs office upon Council approvalCivic Centre to host Home Affairs office upon Council approval
The City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services and Economic Growth Directorates will, in March 2026, request Council’s approval to enter into a lease agreement with the National Department of Home Affairs to establish an appointment-only office at the Civic Centre in Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town was approached by the Ministry of Home Affairs, via the Office of the Mayor, to establish an appointment-only Home Affairs Office at the Cape Town Civic Centre in Hertzog Boulevard in the CBD.

This initiative forms part of a collaborative effort between the City of Cape Town and National Government to improve access to essential civic services for residents.

The proposed facility will be located on the second floor of the Civic Centre. The Department of Home Affairs will enter into a formal lease agreement with the City to secure the space. Upon conclusion of the lease, the Department of Home Affairs will be granted early occupation in order to commence internal construction and operational readiness activities.

The item is scheduled to be submitted to Council for consideration and approval in March, if all goes as planned.

‘Once established, this dedicated Home Affairs office will enhance service delivery by providing Cape Town residents with streamlined, appointment based access to key national government services within a centrally located City facility. We are eager to get Council’s nod of approval for this very important collaboration that will definitely go a long way in improving access to essential services. The Civic Centre is ideally located with great access to public transport services, such as the MyCiTi bus service, Station Deck minibus-taxi facility, and Cape Town station at its doorstep; and provides visitors with a safe and dignified environment for conducting their business,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

The City’s Property Transactions Department is busy finalising the lease agreement.

‘This intended property transaction demonstrates good governance in action. By optimising our property assets, we ensure that City-owned land and buildings are leveraged in a way that delivers the greatest possible benefit to communities, supports economic activity, and unlocks long-term value for residents,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos.

‘The establishment of a modern new Home Affairs office at the Cape Town Civic Centre, as an alternative to the busy office in Barrack Street, demonstrates our commitment to delivering for the people of Cape Town. It also represents yet another significant milestone in the implementation of the Home Affairs @ home reforms, which are focused on bringing essential services closer to where people live. By locating our services in an accessible and well-connected public facility, we are making it easier for residents to access critical documentation in a safe, efficient and respectful environment. This partnership with the City of Cape Town reflects our commitment to work together to modernise service delivery and ensure that every person, regardless of where they live, can experience a reformed Home Affairs that delivers dignity for all,’ said the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber.

More information will be available once this item has served before Council.

2026-02-04T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#717cd3b5-0909-49b4-9b80-861bd31e9f24;L0|#0717cd3b5-0909-49b4-9b80-861bd31e9f24|home affairs;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#029fe683-1cda-4db0-b82a-bf96ce467c79;L0|#0029fe683-1cda-4db0-b82a-bf96ce467c79|Corporate services;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#5cef3550-8a32-4ff2-8bc5-7fd3bc2ba149;L0|#05cef3550-8a32-4ff2-8bc5-7fd3bc2ba149|Economic growth;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
