City working to improve water pressure to areas impacted by the 75-hour shutdown operation City working to improve water pressure to areas impacted by the 75-hour shutdown operation
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"century gothic", sans-serif;">The essential maintenance work on the Cape Flats bulk water pipeline network commenced in the early hours of this morning (Friday 16 September). The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is aware of water supply constraints in parts of the city not on the original list of affected areas – this situation should improve once water has been rerouted from other parts of the water supply network over the next few hours.

Work started overnight to drain the affected bulk water pipelines.

The City is aware that residents in areas outside of the original footprint are experiencing water supply constraints this morning.

Reticulation operations have swung into action with the rerouting of supply, that will result in improving water pressure in these areas, as well as areas that were listed to experience low water pressure during the shutdown. The situation is being closely monitored.

'This is a mammoth undertaking, and the City thanks residents for their patience during this time. I want to reassure them that we have all hands on deck to oversee the successful completion of the project, and to mitigate the impacts on affected residents. The City proactively activated its Disaster Coordinating Team in Goodwood to monitor and respond to all aspects related to this dynamic operation. Key aspects include the management of water tankers in areas with no water supply, and ensuring the safety of teams in the trenches, doing the maintenance work,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

THE PROCESS AT A GLANCE

Teams drained the bulk water pipelines overnight.

Currently, water supply is being rerouted to areas experiencing low water pressure, with the exception of Schaapkraal, Peacock Close and Pelican Heights. These three areas will be without water for the duration of the operation.

Currently some areas neighbouring those identified on the map are also experiencing low water pressure or no water but pressure is expected to improve over the next few hours as water is rerouted to the areas.

It is anticipated that the biggest impact will be on Saturday when the actual maintenance happens, and then it will start improving late on Sunday when the water starts filling the distribution pipeline again

'Our teams are working around the clock to ensure the work on the valve replacements is completed as soon as possible. While this operation has been planned in great detail, in the event of unforeseen circumstances, we will make every effort to address these in the shortest time possible, through the DCT. All residents currently impacted by low water pressure are encouraged to store water in clean sealed containers in case of unforeseen circumstances. The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused and reiterates that all consumers ultimately benefit from these improvements to the water supply infrastructure network,' added Councillor Badroodien.

WHAT THE THREE-DAY OPERATION ENTAILS AND WHAT TO PREPARE FOR DURING THIS PERIOD

A copy of the map and leaflets in three languages for the different areas are available here: https://bit.ly/3xp1sT4

No water areas

There will be zero water pressure, which means no water, in the following three areas for three days:

Pelican Heights

Peacock Close

Schaapkraal

There will be standpipes and water tankers in these areas to provide water for essential use.

WATER TANKERS are planned to be at the following locations.

Tankers may need to be redeployed depending on the needs at the time and will also need to move off-site to be refilled and refuelled.

Schaapkraal:

Ottery Road opposite Spar Warehouse

George Smit Road

Weltevreden Road, Philippi (next to fruit stall)

Corner of Olieboom and Boundary roads

Corner of Boundary and Kroan roads

Corner of First Avenue and Schaap Road

Corner of Fifth Avenue and New Strandfontein Road

Corner of Ninth Avenue and Schaap Road

Corner of 14th Avenue and Schaap Road

Peacock Close:

Corner of Emerald and Pearl roads

Opposite Turquoise Close

Pelican Heights:

End of Seagull Road

Shelduck Road

STANDPIPES will be at the following locations:

Schaapkraal:

George Road

Sameer Barber shop, Old Strandfondtein Road

103 Old Strandfontein Road, just off Klip Road

Peacock Close:

Seventh Avenue, off Old Strandfontein Road

Hanekam, corner of Old Strandfontein Road

Corner of Lorikeet and Old Strandfontein (behind Shoprite)

Fairy Wren Road, corner of Old Strandfontein Road

Pelican Heights:

Corsair Crescent

Corner of Clipper and Frigate

Corner of Dennegeur and Frigate

Corner of Spine and Dennegeur

Low water pressure areas

The following areas (listed in alphabetical order) are anticipated to experience low water pressure, which may become a 'trickle flow' at times: Browns Farm/Philippi, Eagle Park, Grassy Park, parts of Khayelitsha Site C, Hanover Park, Heideveld, Lavender Hill, Lotus River, Manenberg, Mitchells Plain, Muizenberg, Mxolisi Phetani, Ottery, Parkwood, Retreat, Seawinds, Steenberg, Strandfontein, Surrey Estate, Vrygrond, Wetton and Zeekoevlei.

Water supply is being rerouted from elsewhere in the network to these areas.
