City warns residents of electricity scammers | City warns residents of electricity scammers | | <img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/City%20news.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /> | <p>The City of Cape Town’s Energy Directorate urges residents to be aware of scammers in the Somerset West area pretending to be City officials and asking residents to make a payment to them for their electricity related queries. This is a scam and the City urges residents to report all suspicious behaviour or requests to the City and the South African Police Service (SAPS).<br></p> | <p></p><p>The City has been made aware of a new scam in the Somerset West area. Scammers pretending to be City officials are informing residents that they need to pay a fee, ranging from R500, to remain connected to the grid as well as for other electricity-related queries. </p><p> </p><p>'The City is working with the SAPS to see that the criminals are brought to book. We remind residents that electricity officials will not ask for money for any electricity related matters in their area. Municipal bills or account payments are to be made directly to the City via the convenient online options or at our Customer offices and walk in centres. </p><p> </p><p>'The City urges residents to always be cautious of new scam attempts and to please report suspicious behaviour to us and the SAPS,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen. </p><p> </p><p><strong>Report any suspicious behaviour to the City's law enforcement agencies or the City's Fraud Hotline on 0800 323 130 </strong><strong>or to the South African Police Service (SAPS).</strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>Remember:</strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>When work is being carried out in a neighbourhood, municipal workers and City contractors carry a work order number specific to that home and a City-issued identification card. Residents are urged to be vigilant and to request these from the official before allowing them onto their property.
