City processed close to 900 000 vehicle transactions since June

The City thanks members of the public for their patience during this extremely difficult time. Revenue offices have processed close to 900 000 transactions, including motor vehicle licensing and renewal, over the past months and officials have been working at night and over weekends to clear the three to four-month COVID-19 backlog.The high volume of transactions is not unique to the City, but is a country-wide phenomenon caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the national lockdown regulations.‘All the City’s licensing offices were affected by the hard lockdown, which caused a large backlog of vehicle registrations and renewals. City officials have consistently processed double the number of transactions per month since June and the volumes remain high due to this abnormal situation, which has affected all aspects of society. We have also experienced high vehicle registration volumes from car dealers since the lifting of the hard lockdown. This is in addition to the license renewal backlog. The City has been managing the situation by redeploying staff, asking staff to work at night and on weekends to clear the backlog and encouraging more residents to apply for renewals online.‘The number of people in queues has reduced over the past month. However, queues still appear to be long due to the abnormal situation and therefore it remains vital that customers practice social distancing. The City thanks residents for their patience and understanding while we continue to provide services as best as we can in this extraordinary time,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance and Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson.Customers are reminded of the following National Transport regulations (note fines are nationally determined, the City may not unilaterally write off fines)<ul><li>Discs that expired on 30 September: the renewal is overdue</li><li>Discs that expired on or before 31 August 2020 (including the COVID-19 three-month grace period): the renewal is overdue</li><li>Motor trade vehicle numbers/trade plate: renew by 30 November 2020</li><li>Driver’s and learner’s licenses: renew by 31 January 2021</li></ul>What to expect when visiting an office:<ul><li>COVID-19 screening at the entrances. Limited number of customers allowed in at a time due to COVID-19 regulations</li><li>Social distancing is required and must be adhered to</li><li>Visit early in the day. If queues are too long, please consider returning the following day.
