City officials show off their midwifery skills

 © City of Cape Town

Two City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management officials saved the day on Sunday December 18 when they helped to deliver a baby boy.

Sam Freeman and Dominique Daniels were on duty assisting with the Identikidz programme when they were approached by Law Enforcement officers who told them what was transpiring in a nearby public bathroom.

Freeman (pictured) rushed into the toilet and found the mom-to-be in pain on the bathroom floor. He proceeded to help her deliver the baby while his colleague Daniels relayed the situation to the Disaster Operations Centre and the emergency medical services that were on route. The baby has been named Samuel.

Freeman kept baby Samuel wrapped in a blanket provided by a bystander and waited for the ambulance to arrive so they could cut the umbilical cord. Mom and baby were transported to Somerset Hospital.

‘Yet again, our staff members have done the City proud. We’re told the mom was only six months pregnant, so the actions of Messrs Freeman and Daniels are to be commended. If they hadn’t responded in the way they did, the situation might have turned out differently,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

End
2016-12-19T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#1118665d-fce1-4685-9d86-4cb56c129a36;L0|#01118665d-fce1-4685-9d86-4cb56c129a36|disaster risk management branch;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#b25bf8ee-0942-4eaf-a5f7-a27bcfb62502;L0|#0b25bf8ee-0942-4eaf-a5f7-a27bcfb62502|delivering a baby boy;GP0|#3bd13869-3207-4532-9db7-a4ca95867a50;L0|#03bd13869-3207-4532-9db7-a4ca95867a50|JP Smith;GPP|#3f57ea8a-3adb-4a8f-bb3a-0a20a62c7fe91
