City launches Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2023 | <p>The Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability showcases how the City is mainstreaming sustainability thinking in project planning and implementation based on a long-term approach to development.<br></p><div>‘In recent years, Cape Town has confronted severe shocks that have had far-reaching implications for our city. This includes the water crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, a national energy supply crisis and ongoing load-shedding, inland water quality challenges, and increasing climate change risks. At the same time, rapid urbanisation is placing increasing pressure on the city’s land, natural assets and resources. Yet, Capetonians have repeatedly demonstrated resilience and innovation when confronted by these shocks. This inspires confidence that we can build a sustainable city, and indeed a city of hope, in line with our long-term vision.</div><div><br></div><div>‘The Urban Sustainability Portfolio is an opportunity to celebrate both the City’s project managers and the many Capetonians who are co-creating sustainable projects together with us, so that our city can be an even better place in the future,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.</div><div> </div><div>This edition of the Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability profiles 30 new projects contributing to building a sustainable city. </div><div><br></div><div>Featured projects for 2023 are grouped into four sections:</div><div> </div><div><strong>Vision Portfolio:</strong> Achieving substantial outcomes through innovative and visionary planning. </div><div> <br></div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Floating solar photovoltaic (PV) pilot, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) programme, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>One contact centre for non-emergencies (OCCNE), and </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Potsdam sustainability campus.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Social Portfolio:</strong> Strong social objectives and extensive community involvement</div><div><br></div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Kommetjie Road and Sir Lowry’s Pass fire stations</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Paint City Safe Space</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Substance abuse projects</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and Athlone vaccination centres of hope (Covid-19), </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Cultural mapping and planning programme, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Differential Model of Care med (DMOCmed) Area Central, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Food systems pilot programme</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Sustainable development goals (SDG) voluntary local review (VLR) 2021, and </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Women and girls resilience programme.</div><div> <br></div><div><strong>Economic Portfolio:</strong> Stimulating economic activity and generating growth</div><div><br></div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>#YouthStartCT entrepreneurial challenge, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Building energy management, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Cape Town Market, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>City of Cape Town Vulnerability Viewer, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>SAP CRM service request enhancement, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Service delivery turnaround project, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>South African Renewable Energy Business Incubator (SAREBI), </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>W3 bus rapid transit (BRT) road construction as part of integrated rapid transit (IRT) phase 2A, and </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Welmoed cemetery Covid-19 phase 6 and Atlantis cemetery Covid-19 phase 4.</div><div> </div><div><strong>Ecological Portfolio: </strong>Meeting current and future generational needs sustainably within our biosphere </div><div><br></div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Atlantis alien vegetation removal, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Belhar Gardens rental estate, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Bellville catalytic-precinct zerowaste initiative, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Electric vehicle (EV) charging station pilot, <br></div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Experiential education garden, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>Helderberg environmental education centre, </div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>My Clean Green Home, and</div><div>•<span style="white-space:pre;"> </span>University of Cape Town African Centre for Cities (ACC)-City of Cape Town knowledge partnership.</div><div> </div><div>The Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability programme is continuously exploring new ways for mainstreaming sustainability.
