The upgrades will assist in enabling the reliable supply to residents, businesses and a number of large power users in the area. The City’s Energy Directorate is the City’s top performer with the biggest spend of more than R1,1 billon for infrastructure investment in the 2023/24 financial year, investing in power infrastructure as well as diversification of energy sources across the city.

|
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, and electricity teams visited the Triangle Farm switching station upgrade project to have a look at the work being completed thus far. The planned budget for the project over a five-year period is R318 million and the project entails the construction of a new switching station building as well as infrastructure network strengthening and new equipment.

‘Cape Town is one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa and this particular upgrade is essential to future-prep our City by increasing the capacity of the switching station’s infrastructure. Once completed, this will not only have immediate benefits for several existing households, but will also attract and support major industries such as large data centres and independent power producers to set up shop in Cape Town.

‘The City is committed to ensuring a reliable and safe electricity supply to all communities, and to achieve this goal, we are investing significantly into our critical infrastructure with more than R4 billion planned spend over the next three years.

‘The Triangle Farm upgrade will significantly enhance the stability, efficiency and capacity of the infrastructure and we are pleased to announce that the work is on schedule and will be completed in December 2025, if all goes as planned.

‘Our municipality has set a South African record for the largest single year infrastructure investment across all directorates within the City. The Energy Directorate is a top performer again, and has spent R1,1 billion or 94% of its infrastructure budget for the 2023/24 Financial Year. The hard work by our officials on the ground and our dedication to infrastructure investment demonstrates our commitment to building a resilient energy future for our communities,’ said Alderman Limberg

Report electricity infrastructure theft and vandalism

Our investment is under threat, however, by the rampant and in some areas, crisis-levels of electricity infrastructure theft and vandalism and illegal connections. The City urges residents to report incidents of electricity infrastructure theft and vandalism. Theft and vandalism also undermines the City’s efforts to restore power to residents timeously where outages occur.

Let’s ACT to protect our power!

Report suspicious behaviour to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre: 021 480 7700.
