City honours its Disaster Risk Management volunteersCity honours its Disaster Risk Management volunteers<img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/Disaster-Risk-Management-Header.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /><p>The long service awards ceremony on Saturday, 4 December 2022 also included numerous commendations for exceptional service and some heroics.<br></p><p>The Disaster Risk Management Centre's (DRMC) Volunteer Corps has a long and proud track record of service to the residents of Cape Town.</p><p>There are 14 volunteer units around the metropole, with just over 500 registered members. </p><p>Volunteers assist the DRMC with standby duties at fire stations, first aid rooms and during fires and/or floods. They are also called on to assist with large scale events that draw big crowds, and form an integral part of the City's festive season preparedness plan.</p><p>This past weekend numerous volunteers were acknowledged for their service and commitment to the corps. <br></p><p><span><figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/DRM%20Volunteers%205yrs_group%20photo.jpg" alt="" style="width:876px;" /></figure>​​</span>Some have notched up five years of service, others 10 or 15 years, and then there were the veteran volunteers, including Julia Overmeyer from the Ottery unit (20 years), Ross Crymble based in Melkbosstrand (25 years) and Joseph Siebritz from Ottery, marking an incredible 30 years of volunteering.</p><p><span></span></p><figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/DRM%20volunteers%20Joseph%20Siebritz.jpg" alt="" style="width:1000px;" /></figure>​​Several volunteers received certificates for their valuable contribution to the corps, while three units received commendations for specific incidents, including assisting with the birth of a baby at Camps Bay Beach.<p></p><p><span></span></p><figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/DRM%20volunteers%20Group%20photo_Camps%20Bay%20baby%20delivery.jpg" alt="" style="width:856px;" /></figure>​​A list of recipients who attended is available here: <a href="https://bit.ly/3Y6quC4">https://bit.ly/3Y6quC4</a><div><br><p>'A hearty congratulations to all of our volunteers who received awards for acts of service or reaching milestones in their journey with the City.
