City granted interdict against protesters attacking MyCiTi stations in Dunoon and Joe Slovo
The City applied for and was granted an urgent interdict following a week of violent protests at MyCiTi stations along the T04 route in Dunoon and Joe Slovo during which MyCiTi infrastructure was damaged and services disrupted. Further threats of attacks, and the intimidation of City personnel and contractors, and commuters wanting to make use of the service, prompted the City to apply for relief from the court.

The interdict will be served on 11 named respondents, among them the Govan Mbeki branch of the South African National Civics Organisation (SANCO) and illegal minibus-taxi operators in the Joe Slovo area, by the Sheriff of the Court during the course of the day.

Furthermore, a copy of the order granted by the court will be placed on notice boards at the entrance to each of the MyCiTi stations along the T04 trunk route.

The order is interdicting and restraining the respondents from intimidating, threatening, harassing, assaulting or in any way interfering with City employees, contractors, councillors, commuters and law enforcement operations at the following stations: Usasaza, Dunoon, Killarney, Potsdam, Refinery, Montague Gardens, Turf Club, Omuramba, Phoenix, Sanddrift and Century City, as well as the Stables MyCiTi bus depot.

The respondents are interdicted from:

entering the stations for the purposes of conducting any protest action or disrupting the MyCiTi service
preventing the free movement or access to the MyCiTi stations by City employees, officials, contractors, councillors, commuters or Law Enforcement officials
coming within 300 m of the MyCiTi stations mentioned above
intimidating, threatening, harassing, assaulting or in any way interfering with operations at the MyCiTi stations, or any commuters utilising or intending to utilise the stations and service

The cost of the damage to the Dunoon station in Potsdam Road and the Phoenix station in Omuramba Road is still being determined and repairs to these stations will commence by next week, if all goes according to plan.

The City cannot allow protesters to vandalise and damage our infrastructure, inconvenience our commuters, and to disrupt the MyCiTi service which is providing a vital and important service to the communities of Dunoon and Joe Slovo.

Vandalism and the destruction of City property, coupled with intimidation and threats to our personnel and law-abiding residents, is unacceptable. There is absolutely no excuse or justification for this criminal and thuggish behaviour.

It is furthermore shocking that SANCO, one of the ANC’s alliance partners, acts as the ringleader fuelling the disruptions and protests that took place in Joe Slovo. It is a sad day indeed when the opposition needs to resort to violence, vandalism and dirty politics in an effort to be relevant in the run-up to the local government elections.

End
2016-03-23T22:00:00ZGP0|#904f8ac3-ad18-4896-a9a8-86feb1d4a1b7;L0|#0904f8ac3-ad18-4896-a9a8-86feb1d4a1b7|Statements;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#ce03aded-5ee9-4610-9ef4-c0b676e202ea;L0|#0ce03aded-5ee9-4610-9ef4-c0b676e202ea|MyCiTi;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#8f959905-d2de-4d92-a9c6-f63353e8be65;L0|#08f959905-d2de-4d92-a9c6-f63353e8be65|Joe Slovo;GP0|#bcf6c414-11ef-4095-a37c-e9c4fa64d4c4;L0|#0bcf6c414-11ef-4095-a37c-e9c4fa64d4c4|city employee;GP0|#5c79b9a3-86cf-4e88-840b-a2195ac21f39;L0|#05c79b9a3-86cf-4e88-840b-a2195ac21f39|city property1
